Experts and residents assess Nausėda’s two-year presidency: why conservatives are trying to topple him

In 2004, Gitanas Nausėda, an economist working at the headquarters of presidential candidate Valdas Adamkus, said of Kazimieras Prunskienė’s team:

“It just came to our attention then. And after being elected, we are already working separately,” said G. Nausėda in 2004.

Fifteen years later, G. Nausėda went to the presidential elections with the slogan “welfare state”. And some political scientists speak almost analogously. The second year of the presidency highlighted that G. Nausėda had not promised the welfare state to everyone and this year he allegedly turned away from LGBT people.

“We see such a distraction situation, constant struggles of sympathy and antipathy. There are often attempts to play in public relations, first of all, perhaps the human rights agenda and value wars, ”Vytautas Bruveris, a critic of Lietuvos Rytas, told LNK.

But did G. Nausėda cheat on something? Even during the election campaign, he was more conservative than the conservative candidate Ingrid Šimonytė.

“We need to see how he will react when the new Public Limited Companies Act is finally proposed. And if he passes it, then everything will be just a storm in a glass,” said political scientist Kęstutis Girnius.

So perhaps the form of action provoked reactions, sometimes even stormy. For example, to publicly cover the priest Algirdas Toliatas, not to mention the homosexual member of the Seimas Tomas Vytautas Raskevičius, who was no less attacked.

“Today, a public inquisition has been formed in Lithuania. They are people who imagine that they can mix dissidents with dirt, ”said G. Nausėda in March.

The storm was sparked by the decision to give a welcoming speech at the Family March rally in Vingis Park in mid-May. And then send Councilor Povilas Mačiulis with a warm speech to the protest.

“First of all, thank you for your activity,” said P. Mačiulis in mid-June at Simonas Daukantas Square.

The critic Andrius Užkalnis LNK stated that he noticed the marginalization.

“And joining people who are, let’s say politely, on the margins of society is a wonderful thing,” said A. Užkalnis.

The second year of the presidency of G. Nausėda was accompanied by conflicts with the rulers. It started with the Conservatives themselves and sought to remove the President of the European Council (EVS). The chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Seimas, Sigismund Pavilionis, continued to speak to the president about the Russian trolls.

Conservatives also ignored President Nausėda’s party on State Day.

“I think the conservatives are trying to overthrow him, to reduce his power in foreign policy. And he is resisting, so far effectively,” political scientist K. Girnius told LNK.

G. Nausėda was consistent on foreign policy. In the first year, she tried to do what political scientists saw as Dalia Grybauskait she’s mistake: she tried to talk to Aliaksandr Lukashenko.

During the first wave of the pandemic, the phone even offered medical assistance. But in the second year, Belarus held rigged presidential elections, protesters were beaten on the street, and a passenger plane landed in Minsk. G. Nausėda became harsh and audible.

“The dictator must know, his honeymoon is over,” said the head of state at the end of May this year.

G. Nausėda spoke colorful phrases while still working with V. Adamkus.

“He imagines that the president is that good aunt, or that good uncle, who can bake cakes and slice them. However, it does not deal with the pan, “said G. Nausėda in 2004.

Now Internet users laugh at their social networks. Especially when you’re going to guess what the president meant.

Despite the riddle the president said in May, a word that begins with “p” ends with “a” but is longer than “political.”

However, in the second year of the presidency, G. Nausėda was not accompanied by a nine or ten-year-old boy, for whom social networks were preparing a public inquisition, in the words of G. Nausėda himself.

“It is not surprising that the angry nation of Facebook is not surprised either. Because already during the elections it was quite clear that they support I. Šimonytė”, – said K. Girnius.

G. Nausėda was appointed successor to V. Adamkus in 2009. Then, according to polls, he was second only to European Commissioner D. Grybauskaitė. And to participate in the presidential election considered. But he decided not to go.

“There are many politicians in Lithuania, not so many economists, so perhaps I will side with the economists,” G. Nausėda explained his decision in 2009.

Now polls show that G. Nausėda is the most popular politician. The reviewers believe that G. Nausėda will also move to the second term.

“At the moment, according to the current situation, if we project the situation for next Sunday, it would be a favorite, it is obvious,” said V. Bruveris, critic of LNK.

It is only because of the conservative values that have emerged this year that it will probably not be possible to partner with V. Adamkus in the next election.

What do my constituents do?

And my voters on the second year of the mandate of G. Nausėda? LNK journalists asked this in various Lithuanian cities.

“He was a newcomer to politics, maybe people had high hopes. But anyway, as they say, the video was not damaged. And I think that by performing abroad, he shaped the image of Lithuania very beautifully, ”said a Kaunas resident.

Another said that their leader in life was former US President Barack Obama. And G. Nausėda along with B. Obama is much weaker.

“But compared to the leaders of other countries, he is a leader,” he said.

“It just came to our attention then. Nothing impressive, nothing outstanding,” another Kaunas resident appreciated G. Nausėdas.

Another said the president was too quiet at the beginning of his term.

“It just came to our attention then. Not all decisions are acceptable to me on my part,” said a Kaunas resident.

Panevėžys asked if he could not “not answer that question” about G. Nausėda’s assessment.

“It just came to our knowledge then. But not very positively. I think there is little intervention, expressions. I think so,” he explained.

Another said that her opinion of the head of the country is quite good.

“He really did a lot, he tried a lot,” he said.

“Help people as much as they can, everything and everywhere. Retirees, for example, are very understanding, ”said an elderly woman in Panevėžys.

Another Panevėžys resident interviewed by LNK cited Arūnas Valinskas’ statement that the country was run by a woman with eggs and now a man without them.

“That’s the president,” the man laughed.

“The president does not keep his promises, he is lying. Also for the LGBT flag, ”said the Vilnius resident.

“The president speaks effectively on foreign affairs, for example on migration issues,” said the Vilnius resident.

Another also praised G. Nausėda. He said it was working “really well.”

“I like his policy, but he has not followed it yet,” he explained.

“It’s normal anyway, except maybe just for a family march that I didn’t like. Anyway, everything else is neutral,” said the Vilnius resident.

Another Vilnius resident, LNK, said G. Nausėda did not have a strong position.
