Climatologist warns that the new heat wave is different from the previous ones: only August offers hope

Climatologist Justinas Kilpys stated on the Information Day program that June was as hot as July.

“It was very hot, June is the second hottest since 1961. And the beginning of July is not far behind either. And the first ten days of July are also the hottest in the last 60 years, “said the climatologist.

J. Kilpys stated that the norm is exceeded by several degrees and that in July the temperature in Lithuania should be around 17 degrees, and now it is set between 19 and 20 degrees, in terms of the daily average.

“But what is very frustrating at the moment is the continuous heat and the increasing number of tropical nights. When there is no way to recover from that heat even at night, there is no opportunity to rest,” said the interviewer of the program “Info Day “.

The climatologist said that the tropical air mass is characterized by being very warm and having a lot of humidity. It is because of the humidity that the temperature does not drop at night.

“And especially in cities where urban heat is also present, due to the amount of concrete and asphalt, the temperature is usually higher in cities than in rural areas. Then we have those tropical nights, when even at night the temperature it doesn’t go below 20 degrees, ”explained P. Kilpys.

He said that the heat had registered before. For example, in 1992-1994, heat was recorded when the temperature exceeded 30 degrees.

“But the main difference was that then a different air mass prevailed and we had much cooler nights, so it was much easier to withstand that heat,” said the climatologist.

Kilpys said this year could be a record year due to the number of tropical nights.

“We live in a new climate and we have to accept it. The climate will no longer be what it was 50 years ago. With that, you need to learn to live and adapt. And to avoid even greater consequences, it is necessary to reduce air pollution with gases that cause the effect of warming, “said the interlocutor of the” Info Day “program.

He said the heat wave will continue throughout this week.

“It will start a little cooling over the weekend, but it won’t be very bright. The temperature will already be below 30 degrees, but it will continue to stay very warm at night and that tropical air mass will change, but it will not shrink. And then the weather will change. And the month of August appears to be close to the multi-year average at the moment, “said climatologist P. Kilpys on” Info Day. “
