“If the officers are in that place at the time, if the officers realize that the person is requesting asylum, then the officer must accept it, start the asylum application procedure.

I want to point out that we still have an emergency situation with Covid-19 at this time, so we are not starting those procedures right away.

We still have to assess those people and only after that do we start the asylum procedure, “R. Liubajev said at the press conference.

The SBGS commander could not deny that the same deterrent measures for the illegal entry of immigrants into the territory of Lithuania will work against the citizens of Belarus fleeing to our country from the regime of Alexander Lukashenko.

“When we build engineering facilities, we cannot anticipate opportunities for those people to come in any other way.

However, it is still possible to enter through checkpoints. Of course, at the moment there may not be as many people from the Belarusian opposition coming to Lithuania through the checkpoints, ”said the SBGS commander.

Unexpected things are happening on the border with Belarus: filming Lithuanian crews, trying to get some migrants back

When asked how the border guards would separate at the fence, whether they were Belarusians, Iraqi nationals or other migrants, he replied that there would be no need for distribution.

“As the head of the SBGS service can say, we should not distinguish whether he is a citizen of Belarus or a citizen of another country.

If a person is on the state border, if they are applying for asylum, then we have to assess the situation and accept their application, “Liubayev said.
