Šimonytė: if this continues, fall can be quite unpleasant

Although expected, public immunity was not achieved on July 6: 70 percent of the country’s adult population could not be vaccinated.

Prime Minister I. Šimonytė said on Friday that if public immunity cannot be achieved by the fall, unpleasant decisions may be made.

“I would like us to achieve public immunity by the fall. Otherwise, I am afraid that the fall can be quite unpleasant,” the prime minister said on Friday.

He also predicted that the number of new cases could grow soon.

“The number of cases is likely to start growing soon. The main question is when the tension in medical institutions will start to grow. Because the number of cases is not the problem,” Prime Minister I. Šimonytė said on Friday at the LRT radio show “Important Conversation”.

Delphi recalls that on Wednesday, after the government meeting, Prime Minister Šimonytė asked residents who have not yet done so to get vaccinated. The improvement in the epidemiological situation has stopped, said the head of government.

“I would like to once again appeal to the people of Lithuania and urge me to take the opportunity to get vaccinated. I am very sorry, but I think we will have reason to say that the situation has stopped improving.

We cannot say that it has somehow deteriorated very dramatically, but I would appreciate that by the next day, the number of new cases no longer decreases compared to the previous week, and the proportion of positive tests is increasing.

Given the intense social contacts and the fact that many people interact with each other, I do not rule out that we may start to see a rapid increase in the number of new cases.

“If we do not want a new quarantine, and we do not want to be sure, then these few weeks or months, which are now relatively green, could be the best opportunity to make a gift for you and everyone else, is to go get vaccinated”, I said Wednesday. Šimonytė.
