The exhibition “Klaipėda Bohema. From the archives”. Reminiscent of a performance or a reflection of the legendary times of the bohemian times of Klaipeda, the opening of the exhibition attracted large numbers of people, all those who wanted to fit into the exhibition spaces at the same time. The legendary “Birch” was also heard during the event.
The thunderous start of the exhibition.
An exceptional turmoil on Saturday night at the Klaipėda Cultural Communication Center revealed that something extraordinary was happening. The central spaces and their entrances were crowded. Among those gathered, it was possible to observe prominent personalities of art, culture and the legendary bohemian and contemporary creators of the port city. All these people were invited to the opening of the exhibition on bohemian Klaipeda. It was easy to identify some of the people in the photos displayed.
The opening of the exhibition, which received a lot of attention, was unconventional and more reminiscent of the performance, there was no lack of exotic bohemian accents of the port city, the music of the period studied in the exhibition was heard and the dances were full.
At the exhibition – people and places
It is announced that the historical-artistic exhibition, formed according to the research material “Klaipėda Bohema 1985 – 2000”, exhibits photos from personal archives and the website epaveldas.lt, objects and their stories, posters, videos of cultural events, recordings audio from Klaipėda music groups, etc. ., counting on the 20th century. the atmosphere of the city of Klaipeda in the late 19th century and the informal movements that took place here.
The author of the project and the curator of the exhibition Sondra Simana, gathering the material for the exhibition, recorded more than 100 hours of memories and collected around 1,000. photos from 52 personal files.
A map was drawn for the exhibition, according to which it will be possible to walk around the city and look for historical meeting places for Klaipeda artists,
The port city bohemian of the mentioned period is presented in the exhibition through the meeting places of artists of the time: “Fanierke”, “Partenkė”, “Mansarda”, “Gluknamis”, “Kindergarten”, “Old Pier “, galleries” Pėda “, Baroti and” Bohema “, bars” Bean “,” Teatrabaris “,” Centras “,” Paštelis “,” Fotogalerija “and the most popular spot – bar” Bohema “with its owner Stefute.
I dominate locations and personalities
S. Simana noted that the places that brought together the famous Bohemian people of that time were a kind of security and trust ports.
“Everyone was looking for their own, nobody knew what would happen to freedom, the bloody events of January 13 had not yet come. And that development was completely Western, the desire of the free man to be here to trust. In Soviet times there was no trust each other, you couldn’t trust a neighbor. ” “When you got to the Theater Bar and then to Bohem, you felt safe. It was very important. You could be silent, but you could be silent about something, you could speak. The feeling of security was very important for that period, the opportunity to feel safe” said the curator.
The interviewee noted that there are a couple of levels of appearance in the exhibit. One of them is a very specific point, the already mentioned “Bohema” bar, the other, people who were united by the very concept of bohema. It is an attractive and mysterious community of people who have had and have a slightly different approach to the processes that take place around them.
Bohema vibrates emotionally for everyone. It’s something intellectual, something completely exclusive in our lives, “said Simana.
While organizing the exhibition for over a year, S. Simana said she had kept a look of surprise: the authenticity of people, experiences and attitudes was surprising. The interlocutor also emphasized that in this case, the moment of memory as an opportunity to exist, not to disappear, is very important.
Will a novel be born?
The curator of the exhibition noted that the exhibition, which opened this weekend, is more than a year of work that can still continue.
“My goal is a novel. I am a writer. Exposure is an intermediate link for me,” said Simana.
The interlocutor did not hide that there is still room for expansion in the study of the life and processes of the cultural workers of the port city by delving into the themes of the artists Aleksandrs Ilginis, Klaipeda and Leonidas Donskis.
“That period could take until around 2003, when L. Donskis established political science departments here, taught and had high hopes of making a very serious university here. It is really cruel that Klaipeda is simply spitting out local intellectuals,” he said. curator of the exhibition.
The “Klaipeda Bohema” exhibition will run until July 19.
