Officials with the Aviation Board of the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) received information from the National Transplant Office early Tuesday about the need for a plane to transport the donor organ.

In the afternoon, the Eurocopter EC 145 helicopter landed from the base in Paluknis, Trakai district, landed in Klaipėda, in the meadow near the Mariners Hospital, for 15 hours. In the port city, the pilots waited until the medical team from six Klaipeda university hospitals prepared the necessary equipment for the flight and properly prepared the donor organ for transport.

5:15 pm Eurocopter EC 145, which took off from Klaipėda, landed at the Kaunas clinics a few minutes after 6 pm. The specialists who removed the liver from the plane rushed to the transplant operation.

After half an hour, the SBGS helicopter, which had successfully completed the task, returned to its base in Paluknis, Trakai district.

The SBGS and the National Transplant Office have an agreement according to which the organs needed for transplantation are transported by Eurocopter border helicopters. These planes are high speed, maneuverable, require a small area to land and take off, so they can land in courtyards or hospital areas to collect organs.
