The professor said he did not know how the idea of calling him an honorary citizen of Vilnius was “tripled” but decided not to protest.

The City Council noted that all the activities of the professor are worthy of the title of honorary citizen of Vilnius: historical role in politics, merits for the restoration of independence, contribution to the development of Vilnius politics and culture.

Vytautas Landsbergis was the first de facto leader of Lithuania after restored independence. Under his leadership, on March 11, 1990, the restoration of independent Lithuania was announced.
The name of an honorary citizen of Vilnius is the highest evaluation that citizens can initiate and give to personalities for meaningful work for the city and Lithuania. The title of Honorary Citizen has been awarded since 1996.
