Russian President Vladimir Putin does not rule out the possibility of running again in the presidential elections if the pertinent amendments to the Constitution are adopted. He said this in an interview with the television channel “Rossiya-1” for the movie “Russia, Kremlin, Putin,” reports the TASS news agency.

“We were simply struck then. I do not rule out the possibility of running for elections if the conditions of the Constitution allow it. We will see, we will see,” said the Russian leader.

Putin also urged officials to do their job directly rather than seek a successor. He says he knows from experience that if the Constitution is not changed in the coming years, instead of “normal work,” many branches of government will consider who might change it.

Furthermore, the Russian president says he firmly believes that changes to the Constitution are appropriate.

“I am absolutely convinced that we are doing the right thing by adopting the amendments to the Constitution,” Putin said, stressing that the events of the past few months have only confirmed this.

“The current constitution was adopted at a special time when there was a sharp crisis in domestic politics, with tanks firing at parliament and clashes demanding casualties,” said the Russian president.

“Today, thank God, the situation in domestic politics is stable, but there are other things related to our sovereignty,” Putin said.

According to him, the former Soviet republics had the right to withdraw from the USSR, but the withdrawal procedure was not regulated.

“The question arises, what to do if one or the other republic joined the Soviet Union and, having received many Russian lands, traditional Russian territories, suddenly decided to leave the Union? At least they would have gone with what they came for, in instead of dragging the “gifts” of the Russian nation behind them – after all, nothing was written about it, “Putin said during the interview.
