Supporting a document of the European Court of Auditors, which is important not only for states politically but also for millions of passengers, the Association of Defenders of Passenger Rights (APRA) recalls that victims of this illegal air practice have been victims since 2020. March to 2021 tens of millions of passengers got involved in March, and many of them did not get their money back for canceled flights.
“During the pandemic, when airlines received unprecedented rescue packages from their governments, passengers received nothing. Financial assistance to airlines and tour operators was provided with taxpayer money, at that time passenger-consumers were forced to become creditors of large companies and involuntarily granted interest-free loans ”, said the OroSkundas.lt portal, which is managed by the Passenger Balys Rimkus, one of the founders, is a member of the APRA in Lithuania and helps passengers to defend their rights in case of flight interruption.
B. Rimkus added: “If you still have the coupons offered by the airlines for the canceled flights, you should know that the airlines must return the money to you and it is not too late to request it,” said a representative of the passenger rights company.
According to the APRA Association, the report adopted by the European Court of Auditors confirming violations of EU air passenger rights during the COVID pandemic should be a good impetus to strengthen passenger rights and prevent future violations by part of the airlines.
The Passenger Rights Association recalls that in the event of a flight interruption (for example, when airlines delay or cancel a flight scheduled for a long time), the rights of European air passengers are protected by EU Regulation EC 261 This Regulation is one of the emblematic elements of European Legislation for the protection of consumer protection of airline passengers.
“Since this regulation came into force in 2004, airlines have constantly tried to find ways to circumvent it and prevent passengers from exercising their rights. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for airlines to do so, and the new Court report European Accounts is another great step in strengthening regulation and the rights of all passengers ”, said B.
