The project for the Lithuanian capital of culture Neringa invites viewers to experience the nature and culture of Neringa as sensitive and understanding observers.
“We rarely think that the Curonian spit is created by human hands. The “carbon forest” is a reminder of what a touch can be like when a forest turns to black carbon. I wanted the sounds of the installation to resemble a forest on fire. The match for me was vinyl record chips. They are chaotic, then they come together in a certain order, as in nature, in our life “, – A.Mamontov told about the idea of” Coal Forest “.
“I wanted to create a contrast between a living forest and a cold, dead, enveloping well. Whoever saw the fires of the Curonian Spit reacted with particular sensitivity to our work. Although Andrius and I spoke again about the problems in our joint work, at the same time we invited them to be happy with the beautiful that surrounds them, this fabulous forest ”, said the artist J.Vaitkutė on the night of the presentation of the installation .
Representatives of the municipality of Neringa, the project team “Island of the Neringa Culture”, representatives of the Directorate of the Curonian Spit National Park and others who contributed to the implementation of the project met to present the installation.
“The Curonian Spit is a very interesting phenomenon. In our minds, it is associated with rest, holidays, relaxation and, together with threats and dangers, which were once blizzards, now fires. The allure of art works a lot. Louder than words, this talentedly designed installation reveals a stark contrast between life and death.

Rimvydas Karoblis, Director of the UAB Via Solis, which supplied the solar battery for the installation, is pleased that with the help of artists we can also pay attention to man-made damage to nature on a global scale.
“I am very happy that the CO2 emissions issue, which has been prominent for many years, is reaching a wider audience. We need to realize that without changing our habits today, we will only increase the problem of climate change for our children; only together can we achieve tangible results. “
Until the end of summer, the installation will be freely available to visitors in the pine forest near the Valley of Silence, next to the path that leads to the Parnidis dune. Encourage viewers to think not only about the artificial and protected nature of the Curonian Spit, but also about its fragility and the consequences of irresponsible behavior.
The continuation of the project is August 28. a concert will take place, during which the best songs by A. Mamontovas and instrumental music specially created for Neringa will be played. in which you can hear the sounds of nature recorded in the Curonian Spit.
Viewers will listen to the streamed music not with the usual use of sound equipment, but with the help of state-of-the-art wireless technology headphones, thus protecting the surrounding nature from noise pollution and creating an exceptional experience for the listener.
The scenography will be complemented by a lighting design created especially for this project by Audrius Jankauskas, allowing the listener to experience not only the music, but also the surrounding environment in a different way, highlighting the power, beauty and fragility of nature.
