Border guards have already detained 600 illegal immigrants from Belarus this year

On Monday evening, Adutiškis Border Guard agents from the SBGS Vilnius Border Team detained 11 people who had just crossed the border illegally from Belarus in the Švenčionys district. They had no documents, presented themselves as Iraqi citizens and applied for asylum in Lithuania.

On Monday evening and Tuesday evening, in the Varėna district, Border Guard agents Aleksandras Barauskas of the SBGS Varėna Border Team detained two Belarusian nationals who had crossed the border from their country and had applied for asylum in Lithuania. .

According to SBGS, a total of 600 illegal immigrants from Belarus tried to enter Lithuania this year. That number is almost an eighth times higher than in all of 2020. Last year, 81 of those foreigners were detained. 2019 46 illegal immigrants were caught by border guards in 2018; – 104, 2017 – 72.
Among those detained on the border with Belarus this year, the largest number are Iraqi nationals or foreigners who have come forward: 396. Also detained are 51 Iranians, 45 Syrians, 43 Belarusians, 18 Russians, 11 Turks, 10 Sri Lanka, 6 Tajikistan 5 Guinea, 4 Indians, 3 Afghans, 2 Yemenis, Egypt and Gambia, and 1 Somali and Congolese or people who introduce themselves.

With the recent sharp increase in the number of such cases, SBGS has strengthened border security with Belarus. In addition to various organizational measures, officials from other SBGS units were assigned to this section and additional technical resources were assigned. In addition, border guards have been assisted by forces from the Public Security Service, the Riflemen’s Union and other institutions, and FRONTEX officials will soon be working on the border with Belarus.
