According to him, 12 migrants who crossed the border illegally were detained in the Ignalina district on Saturday, ten on Sunday and ten more on Monday morning.
“He declares that he is an Iraqi citizen, but that there are also citizens of Syria, Iran and other countries. But most of them are Iraqi citizens. At least according to their statements, “R. Liubajev told LRT radio on Monday.
The commander said there was a recent trend for migrants to arrive in small groups of 10 to 15 people.
In total, almost a hundred and a half illegal immigrants from Belarus tried to enter Lithuania this year. This figure is several times higher than in 2020.
Last year, 81 of those foreigners were arrested. In 2019, border guards captured 46 illegal immigrants, and in 2018, 104.
With the recent increase in the number of such cases, SBGS has strengthened border security with Belarus. In addition to various organizational measures, border guards from other units were assigned to this section and additional technical resources were assigned. The border guards are assisted by forces from the Public Security Service, the Riflemen’s Union and other institutions.
SBGS plans to rent modular cabins to house illegal immigrants.
The State Border Guard Service (SBGS) plans to rent modular cabins in the near future to accommodate illegal immigrants.
“The Alien Registration Center is filling up pretty fast. The decision to set up a tent camp was made on time, but it was a desire to solve the problem here and now. We understand that this is a temporary solution, and this week we plan to seek a systematic long-term solution, ”SBGS commander Rustamas Liubajevas told LRT radio on Monday.
“We are talking about renting modular cabins or containers so that we can set up such a center and house asylum seekers there,” he said.
According to the commander, modular houses are planned to be built in the territories of the SBGS units.
“We still have some of those reservations in the city of shops, some of those reservations to host our school and other departments, firewalls, national teams, but we already have to think ahead and plan a multi-system solution,” said the commander of border guards.
Following the sharp increase in the number of illegal immigrants detained on the border with Belarus, a camp has been set up on the territory of the Foreigners Registration Center in Pabradė. It is designed to isolate and house migrants.
The isolation block has capacity for 60 people, the accommodation block – 290 foreigners.
According to Liubayev, the situation on the state border with Belarus is difficult to predict.
“We see that sometimes there are really a lot of illegal immigrant arrivals, sometimes they decrease,” he said.
The SBGS commander stressed that the situation is nevertheless under control.
According to him, an integrated security system is needed on the border with Belarus, both technical monitoring tools and engineering equipment.
“We are in favor of an integrated model in which all possible technologies and tools are used. In our opinion, priority should be given to smart systems, which can be used to detect illegal immigrants in a timely manner and detain them accordingly. “, He said.
However, if additional assignments arise in the future, it might be possible to think about the establishment of several engineering facilities, such as a fence. However, based solely on European practice, a whole range of other measures should be applied to the problem that is unlikely to be solved. One of the most important preventive measures is the return of these people to their country of origin, “said the commander.
According to him, a fence has already been built in some stretches of the border, but it does not always stop violators.
“We see that it is possible to jump the fence quite quickly, with certain means, in two or three minutes,” Liubajev said.
The Belarusian government plans to install modern border surveillance systems by the end of 2022.
According to SBGS, this year almost one hundred and a half illegal immigrants from Belarus have already tried to enter Lithuania, which is several times more than last year throughout the year. Most of them are Iraqi citizens.
Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė has said that the increased flow of illegal immigrants is a deliberate policy of the Belarusian regime against the Lithuanian state. According to her, this indicates the beginning of a hybrid war.
