To speak to the participants of the Great March for the Defense of the Family, who protested in the country’s most important institutions on the third day in Vilnius, the President’s Senior Advisor on domestic politics came out when they met at the Presidential Palace.
He thanked the protesters and expressed concern about the lack of a constitutional law on the Referendum, arguing that citizens should be consulted..
He discovered his people
At the beginning of his term, G. Nausėda was a newcomer to politics, so we did not know his line of values and his supporters. 15 minutes said S.Spurga, associate professor at Mykolas Romeris University (MRU).
But now, he said, things were starting to show.
It is said that P. Mačiulis’ meeting with the rallies only demonstrated that the president’s greeting, which was launched during the Great March for the Defense of the Family in mid-May, was addressed directly to its participants and that the president of the country expresses your support for them.
“Let’s remember the previous polls on relevant topics with a certain trend. After that, he did it in the annual report between the lines, but he touched on the issue that people should not be feared, that the article of the Constitution on the family must be respected.
Another fact is the recent meeting this week, for some reason, only with members of the opposition, who are known to take a similar position. And now this meeting of the presidential adviser is aligned in line with these events, “said the policy expert.
Although the presidential speech broadcast at the family march in May was fairly moderate, it legitimized some controversial figures and the rally itself, S. Spurga believes.

So here too, he thinks, “the mere fact of the show gives this reunion a lot of punch.”
The president’s paradox
According to S. Spurga, the fact that the president’s advisor spoke at rallies about the importance of the ballot box, the Referendum Law and recalled the issue of going to the European Council is nothing new.
In this case, in his opinion, what matters is not the content of the words, but the circumstances in which they were spoken.
On the one hand, today’s meeting of P.Mačiulis with the rallies means that the presidency supports them, although it is still being decided whether the rally is taking place legally.

On the other hand, according to S. Spurga, G. Nausėda is asking for the support of the protesters with this gesture.
“The president has discovered the people he can turn to, who listen to him and understand him better, so he will now follow this path,” said the MRU associate professor.
At the same time, he added that this is a kind of paradox.
“If we ask the president if he is 100 percent. Accepts European values, is European and defends Lithuania’s position in Europe, he would probably say yes, <...> and at this moment it is in another position of value ”, explained S. Spurga.
I missed the chance to draw a line
M. Jastramskis, associate professor at Vilnius University (VU) Institute of International Relations and Political Science (TSPMI), also noted on his Facebook account that the president missed the opportunity to “draw the line.”
“The legitimacy of aggressive, extreme anti-liberal movements never promises anything good for democracy.
I understand the wish of the presidency to seek alliances and the wish of Gitan Nausėda to be re-elected. In my view, here is a line consistent with the previous wishes to balance, to reconcile what is not entirely compatible.
However. “One day in Sweden you are talking about human rights, and the next you are greeting protesters who want to overthrow parliament and yesterday you yelled at the Seimas member about bitterness: it is a dangerously missed opportunity to draw a line.” wrote the political scientist.
According to M. Jastramskis, many things can be explained during power struggles and lack of political experience.
Nor, in his opinion, does the presidency take the family march seriously and do not see it as a threat to democracy or constitutional order.

“It just came to our notice then. Hindenburg also had no plans to make Hitler chancellor.
The example is extreme and hyperbolized, but many unforeseen things happen in history, and the regimes of Lithuania and the Weimar Republic have similarities, ”said the VU TSPMI speaker.
Doesn’t show leadership
When asked why the president’s values politics was only emerging, S. Spurga said that G. Nausėda had been searching for herself and only now had she found a suitable niche and a favorable position for herself.
“He, if we look at it together, probably wants to please many as a personality, as a politician,” said the critic.
However, as the MRU speaker pointed out, it is not enough for a politician to listen to the people and make decisions according to their wishes.
“Good politicians must have leadership qualities, they must lead people somewhere, they must see the future, they must see the perspective, so the president is still difficult to classify as such,” summarized S. Spurga.
