The decisive day of June 29, 2020 was to be one more day in the lives of the Markevičius brothers. Some friends were visiting Algis that day and Stanislaus was mowing the lawn.
In the evening, a cousin came to their home in Kėdainiai, M. Daukšos street, with whom the brothers were in perfect agreement and had been in close contact since childhood.
“I’ll feed you soon,” he said, placing a pint bottle of vodka on the table. Stanislaus cut the sandwiches and the three of them sat down at the table.
Execution of Kraupi
As the cousin, who had become the main witness, said, they emptied the bottle and spoke when the brothers got into a fight over something.
“I really didn’t understand why that conflict happened. They just cursed each other. Algis then drank a glass and yelled at Stanislaw, who was in the kitchen at the time, to bring something. I saw Stanislaus suddenly come with a machete in the right hand, ”said his cousin.
S. Markevičius stated in court that he only defended himself out of fear of his brother’s violence. However, the witnesses denied this version; They didn’t even smell of violence that night.
“I had a kind of eclipse, I grabbed the machete and crossed it with my brother over my head. I did not realize what I was doing, S. Markevičius revealed the details of the murder when he appeared in court. – I apologized and saw that my brother shook his head. Since I didn’t suffer, I stabbed him in the heart. “
The cousin who saw the entire execution was shocked by what he saw. According to him, S. Markevičius, without saying anything, crossed his brother’s head with a machete, blood spilled everywhere, and then he pierced his chest with a splint held in the other hand.
“You do Durnas, What did you do! Call the ambulance, “he yelled, but Stanislaus said it was long overdue.
The cousin was still trying to push Stanislaw, but he easily injured himself with the machete during the fight. He had no claims against S. Markevičius regarding this injury, he was convinced that it happened unintentionally.
“I screamed what you did or you Durnas. He said nothing, he was listless, without any emotion, as if nothing had happened. I was so shocked that I couldn’t dial the emergency number, so I ran to the neighbor, ”said the witness to the execution.
The officers who arrived at the scene saw a picture of scabies: blood balls were collected on the floor, a mosque and a sword were thrown near the body.
S. Markevičius himself later said that he kept the mosque under a pillow for security reasons.
“All the representatives of the word of faith entered the house and I expelled them. And if they did not leave, I would show them the machete,” the man who needed that weapon at home told the court. “
Immediately after the crime, the killer was set at 1.68 avg. drunkenness, and the victims were found in the body almost 2.84 away.
Ongoing conflicts
During the examination of this murder case in the Kaunas Regional Court, the details of the brothers’ lives became clear. They both moved into a house inherited from their parents about 5 years ago.
S. Markevičius had nothing to do with law enforcement before, he was not even administratively punished.
And there were criminal stories in his brother’s biography – he was repeatedly convicted of violence against his wife, which is why he ended up in prison. The hateful woman, abused by her husband, divorced Algis after 20 years of marriage, but continued to maintain a friendly relationship. She also interacted with her ex-husband just before the murder.
“Algis had cancer so I called to ask how he was feeling. We talked about the need to register him for chemotherapy, to be in charge of transportation, “he recalled in the conversation.
Just hours after this conversation, the woman received a call from her loved ones about the murder.
“I know they were in constant conflict. Algis was used to cleanliness, and Stanislaus didn’t like order. There were also conflicts over money, Stanislaus received a pension, but he spent a lot, the debts were made in the store, and Algis had to cover them. “I heard from my brother that Stanislaus threatened to cut his brother to pieces and blow smoke down the chimney,” the ex-wife said in court.
Other witnesses also confirmed the brothers ‘constant conflicts, but named the entirely different reason: that Algis was constantly violent against his brother, was negligent, and lived at Stanislaus’ expense.
“I think Stanislaus was tired of Algis’s wasteful lifestyle and one day he just lacked patience,” said a cousin who watched the execution with officials.
A neighbor also spoke about the violence, who said that he had not only seen Algis hit his brother with a stick, but also experienced the harshness of his fist.
“Algis became aggressive after drinking and used alcohol frequently. Stanislovas took over the house, it was normal, I can’t say anything bad about him,” the brothers’ neighbor told the court.
The defensive versions were not convincing
S. Markevičius, standing in court, also claimed that he had seized the machete out of fear of violence from his brother and was very emotional. However, the trial judge did not believe that version.
“Although in the file there is evidence of both the defendant’s witnesses and Algis M.’s previous violent treatment of the defendant and the victim’s criminal record, the victim was inclined to commit violent acts, but in the present case it is not possible to accept that the victim’s conduct caused great agitation in the accused ”, the court ruled.
According to the judge, it has not been established that S. Markevičius was in danger that day, and the violence experienced previously does not in any way justify a serious crime.
According to the record, the defendant, knowing and seeing that his brother, who said he was aggressive when consuming alcohol, met with his cousin to drink alcohol at home, that day he treated his former brother already intoxicated with alcohol, censored with him in uncensored words, which shows that there was no tension or fear that the brother was drunk, that the defendant was not sober, so there is no possibility of alleviating the criminal responsibility of the defendant on this basis, “the judge.
S. Markevičius also raised another version of why he committed the murder. 2014 fell under the wheels of the train and almost died. After this disaster, the man was treated for a long time and could not take care of himself, so his brother took care of him. Eventually, the mess stood up, but he still suffers from severe headaches.
In court, the defendant defended that it was the severe headaches that affected the crime, but the judge also rejected that version.
“As established by the Law of Expertise in Forensic Psychiatry and Forensic Psychology at the time of the commission of the crime, the defendant understood and controlled his actions, both during the crime and now it is found that he has an organic personality disorder, but this they do not prevent you from understanding and managing your actions. “
The court, which sentenced him to 11 years in prison, said the crime was incidental and spontaneous.
S. Markevičius will also have to compensate for moral damage, the murdered son will have to pay a little more than 10 thousand. EUR, and for the ex-wife, almost 6.5 thousand. euros.
