“The family march is very good, except for two aspects. One aspect is the quarantine conditions and compliance. It is a political party, not a protest, finally the Association Law has not been approved, there is nothing else to protest against. The other thing is the messages that always sound that family values are supposed to be defended, and that in reality it is opposed to people being able to create their own happiness as they see fit, ”Delfi TV explained in a conversation with Daiva Žeimyte- Biliene, mayor of Vilnius.
“The organizers have made it very clear what they are doing. They are doing some kind of festival. We must not deceive ourselves or others, nor allow ourselves to be deceived. As the Moscow House is not a cultural institution but a propaganda institution and therefore does not receive permission, the same is true here. We cannot call a protest where it does not exist. Otherwise, we will have any disco event as a political protest, “said R. Šimašius.
Although some speak of the need to organize a referendum on the legalization of the association, R. Šimašius says that this issue is not what should be approached in this way.
“A referendum is good when it comes to various day-to-day problems. I think a referendum would certainly not be a byproduct of spending and some laws, but when it comes to the foundation of society, respect, freedom, allowing people to Live as you see fit, it is not a question of a referendum. We cannot decide in a referendum whether we will respect the rights of all human beings. If referendums become a tool to restrict or deny all people equal rights, It is not democracy, it is totalitarianism, which is being covered by the tools of democracy, ”says the mayor of Vilnius.
He says that the incidents in the capital, when the transitions were painted in the colors of the rainbow, are insignificant.
“There are crazy people sweating swastikas somewhere. But that does not necessarily mean that we are a state, a society that tends to be. On the contrary, we are one of the two European countries where there are no neo-Nazis elected to parliament in national politics. The fact that someone has caught something probably illustrates that there are people who are suffering. What hurts is that I am not going to start speculating anymore, but there are people like that and there are in all societies.
I would say that it should not be exaggerated because someone steals a bicycle, but that does not mean that we are a nation of thieves. It happens that someone is injured by a rainbow drawn on the street, and [ją] spots, but that does not mean that we are a homophobic nation. Even more so in Vilnius. I can safely say that Vilnius is changing very significantly, “said R. Šimašius.
He says that he is disappointed with some representatives of the Liberal Movement and the Social Democratic Party, who in the Seimas did not support the Association Bill and do not agree that the Freedom Party was not sufficiently prepared before presenting the project.
“So much work has been done that sometimes the question arises whether too many resources have been wasted, because the question here is very simple. I see my fellow Freedom Party members in the Seimas as much as they spoke, and when I see the emergence of Socdems who still needed those languages, despite the party’s election program talking about legalizing same-sex couples, it I see as either duplicity or lack of politics in space, ”said R. Šimašius.
“I am not even angry about the so-called Christian conservative flank, who went to the polls in opposition to the idea of a same-sex couple, but the Liberal Movement of various social democrats without the right to vote is completely incomprehensible to me,” he is stressed.
R. Šimašius hopes that in the autumn session of the Seimas, if the Association Bill comes back again, there will be no shortage of votes. In his opinion, the unresolved issue of the association may damage Lithuania’s image in the international space.
“I see that today no one doubts the position of Vilnius and the residents of Vilnius, and it certainly would not harm Vilnius’s prestige, but it would harm Lithuania. I just want to be happy that, thank God, we don’t have a situation like Estonia, which has been a very progressive country for a long time, but then the so-called right-wing radicals and all the ugly things in government. We have to take this very seriously, “said the mayor.
Speaking of not pursuing the third term, R. Šimašius, speaking of future plans, says that after the 2023 elections, he plans to work in jobs that are not related to politics.
„[Būsiu] Unless I am a member of the council, I am going to attend and hope to be elected and that the mayor or mayor is good. For the sake of future prospects in politics, I’ll see what it will be like, but for now, I’ll really want to take a break. At least today, I can say very clearly that after the municipal elections of 2023, I plan to do something that is not related to politics, “said R. Šimašius on the Delfi television program” Conversation with Daiva Žeimyte-Biliene “.
