The first two groups were detained on Saturday by Border Guard officers Adutiškis from the Vilnius border team operating in the Švenčionys district.

Here, in the afternoon and evening of the first day of the weekend, two groups of five people were detained.

On Sunday evening, two groups of migrants were also detained by agents of the Puškės border guard serving in the Ignalina district, but this time they were already much more numerous: 21 and 27 people.

According to preliminary data, the vast majority of those detained are undocumented, including women, men, and minors and young children of all ages. They all applied for asylum in Lithuania.

Detainees will be screened for COVID-19 and temporarily housed in various SBGS units.

Border guards are investigating the events and determining their circumstances and the identities of the foreigners.

According to SBGS, 387 illegal immigrants from Belarus have already arrived in Lithuania this year, which is almost five times more than last year for the whole year, when there were 81 of them.

In 2019, border guards detained 46 migrants, a year earlier: 104.

“With the recent increase in the number of cases of this type, SBGS has strengthened the security of the border with Belarus. In addition to various organizational measures, border guards from other units were assigned to this section and additional technical resources were assigned. In addition, the border guards are assisted by forces from the Public Security Service and the Riflemen’s Union, “the service said in a statement.

As the flow of illegal immigrants from Belarus has increased, the Alien Registration Center in Pabradė is filling the available accommodation, and some immigrants are being housed in the border school dormitory.

Currently, a tent city is being set up on URC territory, provided by the Lithuanian army, and around 350 more migrants will be able to stay there.

At the end of May, in the Belarusian parliament, Aliaksandr Lukashenko said that after the international reaction to the forced landing of a passenger plane in Minsk, Belarus would stop arresting migrants.
