The main theme of the second day of the meeting may be the fight against the pandemic. The G7 countries intend to donate 1 billion doses of the vaccine to poor countries. The abolition of patent protection for COVID-19 vaccines could also be considered to encourage their production in developing countries. The United States government has started discussions on this. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is against it. In addition to Biden, potential supporters of the idea include French President Emmanuel Macron.

The G7 includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, and Canada. Australia, South Korea, South Africa and India will also participate in the conference starting Saturday afternoon. Due to the tense epidemiological situation, the Indian delegation will only participate virtually.

This is the first G7 summit attended by the new President of the United States, Mr. Biden, and the last, with Mr. Merkel. The meeting will end with a final statement on Sunday.
