The joy of being able to ride light motorcycles with a category B is fading

So far, the procedure for granting such a possibility has not been approved, and possibility schemes, such as having a category B driver’s license, mount 125 cubic feet. cm “pony” causes the most amazing yawns. And finally, it turns out that this law is attractive only on paper and not in real life. That’s why.

Let’s start with the changes in the wording of the law, which will take effect in a month and a half. According to the adopted amendments, it was decided to grant the right to drive light motorcycles in Lithuania to people aged 24 years or older who have at least 2 years of experience in driving category B vehicles and who have completed practical driving training. in the category. Vehicles A1. The training procedure must be established by the Ministry of Transport and Communications or an institution authorized by it.

Driver training in Lithuania is supervised and controlled by the Lithuanian Transport Security Administration. We should get an order from her in the near future on how this law will be implemented, but it is already clear that the process will be quite complicated and will not cause the boom declared by supporters of the law to carry over to light motorcycles. In general, this law is not likely to change anything. Why?

Let’s start with the statistics

According to SE Regitra, on January 1, 2021, there were 1,487,898 people with category B driving licenses in Lithuania. It was they who were most satisfied with the opportunity to test light motorcycles.

The joy passes very quickly when the wording of the law is carefully read. It will only be possible to drive a motorcycle when those 1.5 million drivers have completed a practical training course for A1 vehicles. Therefore, they will have to go back to driving schools. What will that course be, we can only fantasize.

The practical part of the A1 driving course now consists of 10 academic hours – 5 trips (same conditions as for category A). Some of them are done on site and others in traffic. It is likely that this wording (10 practical academic driving lessons) will not be chosen, so we can consider that it will be necessary to return to school about 4 academic hours and complete 2 races. Such a pleasure is likely to cost about 100 euros.

The driving schools are now cooperating with SE Regitra by exchanging information about the students attending the courses and the course of those courses – approved school theory and practice exams.

SE Regitra can then register the person for a theoretical or practical exam. As a requirement to complete additional practical driving courses has been introduced, this means that the school will need to sign a training (service) agreement with each student. This is an administrative burden.

A medical certificate is required at check-in for driving courses. And that’s another additional line of time and financial spending. The driving school must inform Regitra about the approved / completed practical driving course. Why?

Because it is this body that issues driving licenses, which are the main document that certifies which vehicles each of us can drive. So after the medical check-up, after completing the practical training, we will have to invest the last 14.10 euros (if the driver’s license is issued non-urgently) to be able to saddle those 125 cubic feet. cm “pony” and an additional code would appear on the driver’s license, informing the police about the right we are granted to drive a light motorcycle.

Is this procedure favorable for new drivers?

Would you say that this procedure will benefit all drivers now seeking Category B? No devil. Let’s go back to the analysis of the text of the law in a few sentences.

“For people at least 24 years of age with at least 2 years of driving experience in category B vehicles”: This is what you will be able to drive with 125 cubic feet. cm. motorcycles. Driving schools unanimously agree that more than half of those who come to learn to drive are 18-year-olds who have graduated from school and received driving courses as gifts on the occasion of their graduation. So the 18-year-old will have to wait another 6 years to take advantage of this opportunity. But then the rational mind begins to question: if I already take the time to study, perhaps it is better to choose a category A course and an exam in the “Regitra”, after which I will be able to drive a motorcycle with power. I want and where I want.

I remind you that a license to drive a light motorcycle with a category B driving license is valid only in Lithuania. Stop talking about legal walks in southern Europe.
