STT announces pre-trial investigation following Seimas member Matas Maldeikis’s announcement of the attempt to bribe him. An assistant member of the Seimas was arrested Thursday.
According to the data of the preliminary investigation, the parliamentary assistant K. Motiečius offered M. Maldeikis 50 thousand in the premises of the Seimas. a bribe in euros for a member of the Seimas to personally support and influence other members of the Seimas in order to suspend or indefinitely postpone the adoption of a draft amendment to the Law on Tax on Lotteries and Games.
The STT indicated that during the pre-trial investigation proceedings, searches were carried out at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and other significant places for the investigation. A search was conducted in the office of Seimas member M. Puidokas. A search of his person was also carried out.
During it, the legal demands of the agents to seize the relevant elements for the investigation (mobile phones) were not complied with and they resisted. For this reason, items relevant to the investigation were forcibly seized.
This investigation is controlled and directed by prosecutors from the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
M. Puidokas: I was strangled, suffocated, my clothes were torn
The STT circulated the report after M. Puidokas, a member of the Seimas Labor Party faction, declared on Thursday that he had suffered violence from STT agents in the Seimas. According to the politician, they strangled him, suffocated and tore his clothes.
“Dear colleagues, there has been an unprecedented case in the history of Lithuanian parliamentarism. In my office there were violent STT agents in front of me, they strangled me, tore my clothes. Without any legal status under your orders, as I am neither a witness nor a suspect. I was forcibly deprived of my personal belongings, my hands were bloody, there was no air.
I said that I was suffocating, I was short of breath, I was still strangled and I did not stop my actions ”, announced M. Puidokas during the plenary session of the Seimas on Thursday.
The politician approached the president of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen and asked him what was happening.
“I understand that this is revenge for my active political participation in the Association Law, the Istanbul Convention. But colleagues, even if someone does not love me very much, I am deeply convinced that no member of the Seimas should be treated in this way” , He said.
A representative of the Attorney General’s Office was summoned to the Seimas
After M. Puidokas’ statement to parliament, a representative of the Attorney General’s Office was summoned on Thursday, announced the president of the Seimas V. Čmilytė-Nielsen. “We have contacted the Attorney General’s Office and in the near future, I believe that within an hour, a representative of the Attorney General’s Office will arrive and make a statement in the Seimas Chamber,” he said.
V.Čmilytė-Nielsen stated that the Seimas Chancellery was informed that STT officials would carry out procedural actions in the Seimas building. The head of parliament said she did not yet have information on whether office staff were monitoring the actions of officials. “To my knowledge, a pre-trial investigation is underway regarding the actions of M. Puidokas’ assistant,” the Seimas spokesman said.
