“We cannot restrict freedom of expression by law and prohibit such marches. The municipality is neither for nor against such an event, but first of all we must guarantee and take care of the safety of all Kaunas residents and guests of the city. ”Said Paulius Keras, deputy director of Kaunas municipality administration, in a comment posted Thursday.
According to him, when coordinating the possible routes of the march, arguments were expressed as to why they are not possible: according to the representative of the municipality, it is related to the renovation of infrastructure in different sections or the fact that the march would cause “disproportionate inconvenience “to residents.
According to the municipality, last week the initiators of the event requested permission to march in Laisv Las Alley, but the reconstruction works have not yet been fully completed.
“This object must be delivered in full by the contractor before the fall, after repairing the defects. It will be necessary to replace the cracked granite slabs, fill the joints between them with screens and special putty. Due to restrictions on quarantine activities and related difficulties, as soon as the restrictions were released, Kaunas applied benefits to cafes and other catering establishments operating in Laisvės Alley; companies in this sector were allowed to significantly expand customer service areas. With the increase in the area of outdoor terraces, it was not possible to guarantee the safe and smooth passage and handling of a large flow of people, ”says P. Keras.
The organizers of the event announce that the march is scheduled for September 4.
