For writing a comment against homosexuals on a social network, the husband will be deprived of his freedom for 6 months. The convicted person will also have to get a job or continue registering with the Employment Service.
A pre-trial investigation organized by prosecutors from the First Prosecution Division of the Šiauliai Regional Prosecutor’s Office collected data that in June 2019, after the march of the Baltic Pride festival in Lithuania, people appeared publicly expressing their dissatisfaction with the homosexual-oriented people.
The court found that the comments posted in the comment section of a video posted on the Facebook social network of the march publicly disparaged and incited hatred against homosexuals because of their sexual orientation. One of them was written by a convicted Šiauliai resident who was allegedly angry at gay people.
During the pre-trial investigation, the specialist, having performed the assigned task, found that the man had written a comment in which he expressed the position that the homosexuals participating in the march should be exterminated and that such actions would not be enough. According to the specialist, the comment despises homosexuals and promotes the idea of violence against these individuals.
Due to a similar situation, another pre-trial investigation was carried out at the Šiauliai Regional Prosecutor’s Office, in which complaints were made against a 37-year-old resident of the Radviliškis district who also posted a hate speech in the same video.
The man was found to publicly despise homosexuals for their sexual orientation and publicly incite violence and physical confrontation with homosexuals. A resident of the Radviliškis district admitted his guilt, sincerely regretted it, and was released from criminal responsibility on bail.
Prosecutor Saulius Kulikauskas, who led the pre-trial investigation, draws attention to the habit of writing negative comments that has taken hold on social media: If the culture of communication exists in real life, it must also be respected in life virtual “.
These pre-trial investigations are independent of the main criminal case, which investigates 9 other similar crimes allegedly committed by individuals.
