“We understand that the people of Belarus have now become hostages in their own country; the accused now have no chance to leave the country. But this situation was determined by the regime, not by the decisions of the leaders of the European Union, Lukashenko is the one who pushed the country into this situation, “S. Cichanouskaya told reporters in Vilnius on Wednesday.

He also said that European Union countries could make decisions to further open borders to Belarusians fleeing the regime.

“These are the decisions of the European Union countries, we cannot influence them, but we are in favor of opening the land borders to Belarusians who managed to escape,” he said.

Franak Viačiorka, adviser to S. Cichanouskaya, stated that the office is currently talking with the Polish government and the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the possibilities of facilitating the crossing of the border for Belarusians.

“Unfortunately, it is very difficult because people are simply taken out of buses, out of cars, they are turned around without any explanation. We demand the opening of the borders, we believe that Lukashenko is violating international law, he is violating fundamental rights: freedom of movement. And we will work with international organizations, including the United Nations, “Viačiorka said.
