Addressing the court by video from the colony, Mr. Navaln claimed that he had done nothing to justify the decision to treat him as a fugitive prisoner and to carry out such inspections.
“I just want you to stop and not wake me up at night,” he told the judge. His speech was shown on independent television Dožd.
“What did I do? Did I go over the fence? Did I dig a tunnel? Did I take a gun from someone? Just explain why I was classified as a prisoner who could escape! ”Said A. Navalnas.
He argued that the nightly hourly inspections “are essentially torture” and told the judge: “You would go crazy in a week.”
Navaln, the most determined political opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was arrested in January as soon as he returned to Russia from Germany, where he was treated for five months after poisoning him with a nerve paralyzing substance. He claims the Kremlin ordered him to poison him, but Russian officials reject the accusations.
In February, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for violating probation while receiving treatment in Germany. He was sentenced to probation in 2014 in a robbery case, which he calls politically motivated.
In the colony, he continued his hunger strike for 24 days in protest that he had not been properly treated for severe back pain and numbness in his legs. Last month, after receiving the treatment he demanded, he stopped the hunger strike.
Even during the hunger strike, Navaln was transferred from a correctional colony east of Moscow to a hospital in another colony in Vladimir, 180 km east of the capital. He is still in that neighborhood where, as he claims, night inspections continue, although not so intrusive.
At the time, prosecutors asked a Moscow court to recognize the Navaln Anti-Corruption Fund (FBK) and its network of regional personnel as “terrorist and extremist” organizations.
In addition, the lower house of the Russian parliament, the State Duma, passed a bill in the first and second reading this month that would prohibit members, sympathizers and supporters of “extremist” organizations from becoming legislators.
Many of these parallel steps are seen as an attempt to prevent Navaln’s comrades from participating in the September parliamentary elections.
