Meteorologists were surprised in May, because according to them, almost two May rates melted in Biržai, people kept lighting stoves, the flowering of apples and olives was delayed for almost two weeks, so they asked J. Kilpis that he evaluated last spring in Lithuania.
“Spring was very changeable and although April was on average colder, mid-April was also a week in which temperatures were above the average for several years. May has been colder from the beginning and is the one that stands out the most for its rains.
As you mentioned, it really does look like there may be new rain records in some areas. This distribution of rainfall in May is very uneven. In the western part of Lithuania, this precipitation is more or less in line with the multi-year average. “
According to him, in Mažeikiai and Skuodas the amount of precipitation was normal and should have been normal for May, but in eastern Lithuania, somewhere in central Lithuania, Biržai, Panevėžys, the amount of precipitation is really close to records. .
“Of course, we have to wait until the full amount is added up. Compared to the last three years, this spring is cool and rainy. It is not directly related that if we have a snowy winter, that spring will be rainy. These are things really. unrelated, we only had warm winters with very little snow in the last three years and it became commonplace.
People forget that there is snow in Lithuania and rain in Lithuania, because the last two springs were basically dry, last year was one of the driest months in the history of measurement. Compared to the few last year, these are different. They are wet and cooler. “
When asked about summer weather, Kilpys said long-term forecasts so far suggest that temperatures should be in line with the multi-year average at this time. According to him, delayed vegetation, flowering is actually associated with a cool April and May.
“We will feel that effect in the first week of June, but what the next week will be like is really hard to say and everything can change fast enough.” We can also take hot air (…) from the medieval sea region and then we will be very hot.
I would like everyone to follow those daily weather forecasts for next week and then we’ll see what summer will be like, ”he said.
He noted, however, that the perennial average is low and the average temperature in July and August is 17 degrees.
“But that average hides large fluctuations. One day, the average daily temperature may be 17, the next 30 degrees. (…) The summer will be changeable, as always in Lithuania.”
