The Used Car Buyer Charges: Don’t Be Fooled By Sellers’ Tricks That Can Cost Lives

A significant part of the cars sold in the advertisements is transported to Lithuania after serious accidents in Western Europe or America. They are often rejected in our country and unsafe when resellers sell them foggy. This is exactly what happened to the reader of the news portal tv3.lt, who found no airbags in the car after the accident.

“I bought the car in 2016. It seems that I knew all about its history because the seller did not hide anything. He knew the car had been bought at an auction in the United States, he knew it had been broken down and repaired in Lithuania. It seemed to be handled irresistibly as even then the price was slightly higher than other cars on the market. So far I have passed the technical inspection of the cars without any problem.

I had an accident a few weeks ago, after which the car was found in service. The mechanics found it strange that the airbags did not deploy after such an impact. The check revealed that they did not exist at all ”, explained the interlocutor.

Such a practice, according to experts, is not new. Car repairers strive to get the job done as cheaply as possible, which often affects both the safety of the repair and the quality of the car.

Even high-quality repaired cars are not safe

A representative of the Lithuanian Association of Technical Inspection Companies “Transeksta”, who interacted with the tv3.lt news portal, pointed out that cars that were involved in serious accidents, even if they are carefully cleaned, are often not safe.

“Cars that have suffered serious accidents with large bodily deformations after being” resurrected “to a new life are in all cases less safe, because the straightened or welded metal loses some of the safety characteristics of the body.

A few years ago, we participated in the Iron Trap experiment, during which a 15-year-old BMW was cut into several parts and re-soldered. Later it was smashed against the wall at 64 km / h. The results confirmed the assumptions of technical experts that a car that has undergone such sawing and welding procedures is deadly dangerous, ”says Renald Gabart, spokesperson for Transeksta.

A representative of the online car sales portal Autoplius assures that a lot depends on the blow itself. Being involved in an accident does not mean that the car is no longer safe.

“Some of the cars coming from America or Europe crash. But certainly not all of them. And this doesn’t have to be a problem when viewed from the buyer’s side. The car can only be easily broken (for example, only body parts) and main components are not damaged. In this case, there is no big problem.

Safety depends on how the car crashed, how and where it was driven. If high-quality parts are used to manage the car and the work is done by craftsmen with long experience and high quality standards, safety is not affected. However, if it is handled with the cheapest parts (sometimes used) and made by inexperienced craftsmen, the problems are masked, they are not handled without following the manufacturer’s standards, safety suffers ”, said Gitenis Dauparas, communications specialist by Autoplius.

The cheapest options are not always the best

When choosing a used car, your eyes are generally on those with the lowest prices on the market. Experts say that this choice is not the correct one.

“In order not to be fooled, it is often not necessary to look for the cheapest option. Not for nothing does the car have the lowest price on the market, there are probably hooks,” explained G. Daupar.

According to him, in order to choose the most suitable car, tens of euros should not be saved for an in-service car inspection:

“The best little investment is to have the car inspected at a service center, better yet, an authorized one. Then you definitely won’t be able to hide the underlying problems. If the seller does not agree to have a garage inspect the car, you should not buy it.

The reputation of the seller should also be evaluated: if the selling company provides information about itself, it is more durable, the risk is considerably reduced. It is worth asking the seller about past traffic accidents, the exact list of work performed, used parts. If the seller tends to hide such information, care must be taken. It is also worth checking the history of the car according to the VIN code. “

The interlocutor also notices the trend that, although there are resellers of this type of car in Lithuania who see the repair work in a negative way, it is increasingly difficult to deceive Lithuanians:

“While there are importers who handle the cars negatively, focusing on the lowest possible repair price, there are many who drive the cars sincerely and with high quality, and familiarize buyers with the car’s past injuries, photos show from work before doing it. Cut. It seems that Lithuanians are buying cars more and more responsibly. “
