Nerijus has been living in Norway for six years: he had stayed in America for a while, then tried to make a living in Lithuania, but finally realized that living in his homeland was not easy, so he decided to go to earn money abroad. .
“I worked for a time as a truck driver in Lithuania, but I got tired of the difficulties to cross the border with Russia, I faced inconvenience and corruption. Although I graduated from university and tried to search for work by specialty, looking at my salaries, I realized that I would not survive, – N.Miejatie is not hiding. – I went to Norway to build a house in Lithuania, so for the first two years I lived between two countries – I worked for six weeks and had two vacancies. Flying no longer made sense after the family broke up, so I stayed here for everything. “
In Norway, Nerijus drives a concrete pump. As he himself explains, it is a job in tunnels that are dug under fjords so that you do not have to navigate with ferries.
“The tunnels are about 15 km long and help avoid navigating with ferries, which are very numerous in the country, but navigating through them significantly slows down all traffic,” says N. Motiejaitis.
When he was still a teenager, Nerius became fascinated with motorcycles, but the fact that he could ride them was only realized while he was in America. After traveling to various places, Nerijus gave up his hobby, but 4 years ago he bought a touring motorcycle and began to travel intensively again.
“I already had a motorcycle at 16, but like all young people, we rub forests and villages with them. It was only when I was in the United States that I saved money and was able to buy a more powerful motorcycle, says N. Motiejaitis. – I traveled by motorcycle from Norway to Greece, I went around the Alps. Last year, when there were many restrictions due to the pandemic, my friends and I decided to go to northern Norway. Traveling by car, I would not see what I notice now. In several places, Nerijus rides a touring motorcycle, which is more comfortable than usual for him. And speaking of the indescribable feeling that one experiences while traveling, N. Motiejaitis laughs and thinks that perhaps this romance came from the books read as a child, in which it was written about Indians riding horses in the plains.
“Touring motorcycles are taller at 1.95m, which makes them easier to handle. In addition, I have bought one that belongs to the adventure category, so they are suitable for driving not only on the road, but also off-road, ”explains Nerijus.
Travel to Norway on weekends
Spitting on short trips around Norway usually every other weekend. On Friday night, returning from work, he gathers the necessary items, and when he gets up on Saturday morning, he immediately sits on the motorcycle.
“I drive between 700 and 900 km during the weekend. Perhaps it would seem little if it were in Lithuania or Germany, where that distance can be covered in a few hours. And here in Norway: there are many ferries, winding roads, mountains, – he says N. Motiejaitis. – I also use special applications for motorcyclists that send me off the main roads. There you can choose more winding and mountainous roads. You sit and drive in places where you would never turn because you would not know, sometimes you even have to drive past farmers yards. When you turn on those roads, you drive ant 30 and when you are very good. “
Nerijus usually spends one weekend on the trip himself and the other in preparation for the next trip. While in travel groups online, you are constantly looking to see if someone is not sharing interesting places, and when you see something beautiful, you immediately put it on your map. Also, while riding his motorcycle, N.Motiejaitis is filming everything, so during the preparation weekend he still has to install and upload his video to Youtube.
“I never have a precise plan, but I know where I’m going, what I have to do with it,” says Nerijus. – Once you have worked the system, the preparation does not take long. I bring a tent, a sleeping bag, a mattress, some food so I can cook something myself at night. “

Nerijus confesses that he is not very interested in exploring cities and their architecture, but he is interested in learning about natural objects in a much more pleasant way. The man always tries to see the waterfalls, to drive on winding roads that, when they go up, offer impressive views. However, when it comes to enjoying nature, it is more responsible to take into account the weather forecasts.
“A month ago, I had been going out for five days, looking at the weather radar, showing that it would be raining on Saturday. I thought there was none of that, I drove my roads and flew with my friends that weekend. Sitting in the evening with a cup of coffee, I turned on the radar and saw the rain and snow coming from where I was going to drive home. I realized that there would be problems, – laughs N. Motiejaitis. – I chose to go back the same way I came from, but the rain still hung on me. I got home in minus -4 degrees and snowy. “

Although the weather sometimes hits Nerija with unpleasant surprises, he assures that, for example, the rain does not affect him much, since he has good clothes.
“He is still trying to choose the good weather just because in rain or fog, he will hardly see anything around him,” says N. Miejatieitis.
Nerijus usually invites his friends to join the trip, but they do not always agree, so without any fear the man goes on his way alone. According to him, it is safe to travel to Norway, people are tolerant here and a tent can be set up almost anywhere.
“In Norway, what is not private is for everyone. You cannot pitch a tent where it is fenced, in the city itself or in a person’s yard, but if you are driving, you see a spot or a curve in the forest. , you can stop and pitch a tent. Sometimes you drive at night, trying to find an unreal place to sleep with cruelly good view. This year I am especially lucky with that: I set up a tent, sat on a cliff and looked out over the fjords, “says N. Motiejaitis happily.

During these trips, Nerija only has to pay for fuel, food, and sometimes necessary motorcycle repairs. The man has estimated that the day trip costs about 70-100 euros, and although it is not a small amount of money, it is still cheaper to travel this way than usual.
“The most important thing is that sleeping costs you nothing. In Norway, hotels are very expensive, prices are around hundreds of euros per night, and if you want to pitch a tent on a campsite, prices will start at 15 euros. I was stopped at one very recently because I could not find a place to pitch a tent, so I had to pay 30 euros, – says N. Motiejaitis. – Of course, if you need a shower every day, it will be more difficult, because the rivers here they are very fast and cold, so we go to the campsite every few days to take a bath or look for a lake. Also, like at the gas station during the day, because here it is very expensive to go to restaurants “.

Traveling alone with a motorcycle and a tent is not only cheaper, but also gives Neria more freedom, since it is not necessary to arrange accommodation in advance, you no longer have to depend on the time of departure or arrival. And the images that N. Motiejaitis sees when he spends the night in various places are indescribable.
One of the most memorable spots for Nerijus was the Preikestolen cliff, where you still have about an hour and a half to walk upon arrival. According to Nerijus, it is a flat cave that hangs 600 meters above the fjord, which looks impressive.
“The southernmost point of Norway also left an impression: there is a lighthouse, you can climb to the top, read the story, you have a view of the sea. I also liked the Vestkap plateau: when you get to the top, you can see the sea and mountain tops. It is one of the windiest places in Norway, where boats used to crash frequently in the past. Although Nerius responsibly chooses the places he plans to travel to, he is sometimes disappointed in the images he sees. A man can only be glad that this happens very rarely.

During travel, Nerijus also faces challenges, and the hardest thing is to apply it to others when traveling with companions. According to him, when he drives alone, all decisions depend only on you, and when traveling with friends, N. Motiejaitis realizes that he begins to travel not for himself, but for others. However, these difficulties pay off when you also have to face fun adventures.
“Together with a friend we went to Greece, we looked for a long time where to sleep, finally we turned to the side and found a beautiful lawn by the river. In the morning we woke up to the famous sound: we poked our heads around the tent and saw that we were in a herd of cows and bulls. My carp was orange-red in color, so we jumped out of it quickly because we were afraid that the bulls would not come with it to attack it, ”laughs Nerijus, adding that everything ended happily and the herd passed calmly.
For those who dream of traveling with a motorcycle and a tent, Nerijus advises not to carry things and to drive with the least weight possible. In addition, he recommends that you look not only at the final destination of the trip, but also pay attention to the surrounding objects so that you do not accidentally pass through spectacular places.
“I would recommend having a good tent that is light and easy to set up. If you had a hard time building in the rain, you’d be soaked and want nothing else. My tent sets up in a minute, unfolding like an umbrella, ”says N. Motiejaitis.

Nerius admits that he sometimes dreams of wanting to go on a multi-month trip, but finances and attachment to the workplace prevent him from doing so. However, he now aims to travel as much as possible during the holidays.
“If I had the skills to work remotely, I would definitely travel right away. But now I am tied to work, to the hours worked and to the salary that I receive. That’s why I try to leave for at least two weeks when I go on vacation; if the borders open, I will travel to France, says N. Miejatieitis. “And now my plan is to dismantle all of Norway, because I know that I will not live here forever.”
