“Today, together with some colleagues from the TS-LKD faction, we signed a statement proposing that the issue of legalization of associations in Lithuania be resolved by referendum,” he wrote on Facebook on Friday evening.
The statement he shared, in which politicians react to the draft Association Law registered in the Seimas, cites the provisions of the Constitution, which establish that the most important issues of state and national life are resolved by referendum and that the family it is the basis of society and the state.
The authors of the statement emphasize that the Constitution does not give as much importance to any other institution as to the family.
“Since the family is the constitutional basis of our State and society, only society itself can decide to change the concept of family by expressing its will in a referendum. “Any legislative initiative aimed at changing the concept of family can be carried out only after listening to the nation,” the authors of the statement said.
They argue that an attempt to change the concept of the foundations of the state and society without listening to society itself “would go against the fundamental principles of democracy and the rule of law.” “Therefore, before taking initiatives, we call for a change in the concept of fundamental values based on our society and state, to openly and honestly verify the will of the Lithuanian people by holding a referendum,” the document states.

On Friday, a bill on marriage was registered in the Seimas, which would legalize the union between men and women and people of the same sex. The association is defined in the project as an officially registered fact of the coexistence of two people, with the aim of creating, developing and protecting the relationship between the partners.
The initiators of the law establish that it will regulate the patrimonial and non-patrimonial relationships of single people who live together. Gabrielius Landsbergis, the leader of the TS-LKD, who personally supports the project, and Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė to its suppliers, say it can be difficult to secure support for the initiative.
