Scared by the flood

Residents at the intersection of Algirdo and J. Basanavičiaus streets ironically felt as if they were not located in the center of the city, but next to the spilled river. The rain hit the foundations of their apartment buildings at noon. The water covered the street, the sidewalks, and the grass behind them.

The hill of the lake, which had stopped passing cars, stretched out to Calle Sirupio. Such a flood did not scare the population with any laughter. People feared that when the water reached the basements, the property in them would suffer.

Losses will be reimbursed

For some time, the road engineering and construction company KRS has been carrying out the reconstruction of the sewerage network commissioned by the Panevėžio gatvės company on these streets.

“After so much rain, I expected to receive similar complaints. It rained for a long time and the city’s rainwater networks are old, so the flooding is nothing strange. It was similar a few weeks ago. We work only to prevent these problems, ”said Arvydas Zapalskis, director of Panevėžio gatvė.

However, it soon became clear that the street was flooded by the workers themselves.

“Nobody expected so much rain to fall. If someone has suffered a loss, contact our company, the damage will be compensated,” said A. Zapalskis.

Rebuilt pipes

According to the director, not only was Algirdo street flooded, it flooded more places in the city, but nature alone had really worked on them.

According to the director, the reconstruction of the Algirdo street networks is part of a large project, which has been implemented since 2016 with EU support funds. These renovation works now include the underground pipeline for Ukmergė, Vilnius, J. Basanavičiaus, Beržų streets and will be completed as expected this year. According to the director, 77 percent has already been met. planned rebuilds.

“We are intensively renovating the sewage networks in accordance with new technologies that allow us not to disturb the traffic on the streets,” said A. Zapalskis.

According to him, the next step is to put the sewage and treatment facilities on Senamiesčio Street in order.
