“In the practice of the Constitutional Court there is an interpretation that the Constitution protects the family as a value, protects and protects more the family married between a man and a woman. As far as I know, this Association project does not in any way interfere with the constitutional concept of marriage between a man and a woman, ”he told reporters in the Seimas on Tuesday.

The Constitution establishes that the family is the foundation of society and of the State, that the State will assume the custody and protection of the family, maternity, paternity and childhood, and that marriage is contracted by free consensus between man and the woman.

The coordinated draft law on association provides for the possibility of forming a partnership between members of the same sex.

Mizar said Tuesday that the Constitution now upholds same-sex couples.

“In my understanding, the Constitution protects everyone and everyone’s rights, regardless of sexual orientation,” he said.

According to the lawyer, while working for the CC, his decisions will not be affected by the fact that he defended the interests of the LGBT community in court.

“For me, the provisions of the Constitution that a court and a judge, when trying specific cases, are governed solely by the Constitution, are a duty. And it is clearly understood ”, stressed V. Mizar.

It was because of the LGBT attendance that he received the most reproaches from the Seimas members when considering his candidacy.

On Tuesday, in a secret ballot, V. Mizaras was appointed judge of the CC. 75 members of the Seimas voted in favor of his candidacy, 44 against, 14 abstentions, one ballot was damaged.

He will assume his new position on June 8 under oath at the Seimas.

V. Mizaras, 46, is a professor in the Private Law Department of the Vilnius University Law School, Chairman of the Council of the Human Rights Monitoring Institute and works at the Ellex Valiūnas and Partners law firm.
