According to the political scientist, this conflict has been nothing new for a long time, and the confrontation between the Palestinians and Israel is renewed every few years.
“If such an open conflict has not taken place for several years, the people of Israel are happy to have lived in peace for a long time. It is probably a constantly reopening and recurring wound that occurs for a very simple reason. Attempts. failures of two states, Israel and Palestine (…), to coexist in one territory. “
According to M. Šešelgytė, this problem has been tried to solve more than once and the Oslo accords seem to have pushed towards its solution.
However, what we have seen in recent years have again been attempts to expel the Palestinians, to take a tougher line against them and to bury the idea of coexistence in the same territory. This time, the spark apparently included a few things. On the one hand, there was great cooperation between the Trump administration and the then Benjamin Netanyahu administration to try to solve the problem a little more favorably for Israel than for the Palestinians, ”says M. Šešelgytė.
According to her, the relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was also one of those steps. Furthermore, Ms. Šešelgytė added, there is discontent among Palestinians with the way displaced people are treated and to what extent it is allowed.
“The second very important thing was the quarantine, which generally caused fatigue and highlighted a certain injustice, when the Israeli population was not vaccinated by the Palestinians and the Palestinians ran out of vaccines. “It has often been said that Israel has no role and that it does not have to vaccinate the Palestinians,” he said.

The third thing, says the political scientist, was that during police Ramadan, the police exercised very strict control over meetings, which the Palestinians saw as too strict a restriction.
“Finally, the same spark was the law on the eviction of Palestinians from certain areas in East Jerusalem. This has not only caused great discontent among Palestinians, but has also been condemned by international organizations. “The United Nations has said that the adoption of such a law is in fact a violation of human rights and could even potentially be treated as a war crime,” he said.
According to M. Šešelgytė, for the Palestinians this was the last point and, as often happens in such a heated situation, everything was broken with violent actions.
“It is one thing that there is an internal problem here and it could be resolved internally between Israel and the Palestinians, so a breakthrough could be expected. However, as we can see, there are other states involved in this conflict. Perhaps Iran should be mentioned. and its funded groups, which could aggravate the situation.
If more actors are involved, this could escalate into a conflict that could escalate further. In this case, the question arises as to how far the government of Benjamin Netanyahu will be willing to manage their expectations. “
In his opinion, there is little expectation that anything will change, as it is clear from the rhetoric heard that there is no intention to land.
“This is probably also a step towards climbing,” said M. Šešelgytė.
The political scientist pointed out that after the resignation of the Trump administration, the Biden administration did not express such support for the Israeli government, so it should be more cautious in such a situation.
However, after the March elections, it became clear that the far right has grown stronger and is raising its demands even further. There is support for that group that is important to Benjamin Netanyahu. On the one hand, this rhetoric is related to internal factors, but on the other hand, it is also related to the change of tone in the United States.
With the decline in US support, the bravery of the Israeli government may lessen the escalation of the problem, but it is closely related to internal affairs and meeting the expectations of a certain group of the population, “the political scientist commented.
According to her, even if the United States maintains the tone of not supporting what is happening, domestic politics is still more important.
