“With the release of the quarantine, the streets of Kaunas are flooded with increasing traffic. Not only the central part of the city, but also the curbs of the most remote streets are almost full of cars. They often flock to the courtyards of apartment buildings, occupying places for residents, ”the report reads.

According to the municipality, each year more complaints are received from neighbors about built patios. In the city center and the old town, all streets have tolls, so drivers often seek free parking, leaving cars in the backyards of residential buildings.

“The expansion of the parking areas was planned a year ago, but the situation was corrected with the COVID-19 pandemic: the traffic became less intense and no changes were needed until now. However, after the mitigation of the quarantine, the situation changes drastically ”, explained Justas Limanauskas, director of the Parkavimas Kaunas institution.

Martynas Matusevičius, head of the Kaunas Municipality’s Department of Transport and Traffic Management, says that imposing taxes on all courtyards in the central part of the city and the old town would deter newcomers from cunning, causing inconvenience to local residents.

In response to requests and complaints from Kaunas residents, the next council meeting will propose to expand the taxed territories by introducing tolls on new streets and on all courtyards in the Old Town and New Town.
