By May 15, all work to prepare the beaches for the summer season should have been completed, but rescuers will be on duty at the beaches only after the director of the Klaipeda City Municipal Administration signs an order that officially announces the start of the season. Usually, the start of the beach season begins in early June.
“In Smiltyne, almost everything is ready, changing rooms, benches and wastebaskets have already been built, now employees are preparing the Melnragė-Giruliai stretch of beach. Changers, benches, bins have already been built there, and this week all the bulky garbage washed up by the sea is handled, registered, the staff manages and cleans the beaches so that they not only look beautiful, but are also pleasant for vacationers . there. The toilets have started working, we are also renovating the beach posts and landmarks, ”said A. Siakki about the preparatory work.
While the water is still cold and vacationers are not swimming, JV Klaipedos Beaches is in a rush to train not only rescuers, but also to prepare the beaches before the start of the season.
“We are working at full speed, we have to prepare in mid-May. The selection of rescuers has already finished, their training will be held soon, so more than 60 rescuers will work on the beaches at the beginning of the summer season ”, assured A. Siakki.

In total, there are planned to be 12 stalls in the Klaipėda beach sections this year: 5 in Smiltynė and 7 in the Melnragė-Giruliai beach section. A new rescue post also appeared between Melnrage I and Melnrage II. There will also be a new wooden path to facilitate the arrival of people to the beach. Some tracks will be updated, others will be reinstalled so that people can come from I Melnrage to the rescue station. In fact, a lot of work had to be done before excavating the sand tracks. But we are preparing, we are waiting when summer and warm weather finally arrive, ”said A. Siakki.
Warn that the spring sun is dangerous
Jolanta Česienė, Head of the Skin and Venereal Diseases Branch of the Infectious Diseases Department at Klaipėda University Hospital, said that one should not rush to enjoy the sun.
“Both the spring sun and the summer sun are useful and dangerous for us. However, the spring sun is more dangerous for us because the skin after winter is not at all ready for the sun, it is pale and much faster we can get sunburned, not tan, but burn. This is where all the dangers lie, “said J. Česienė.
When the weather warmed up, many Klaipeda residents went to the seashore, although the water temperature still does not allow them to bathe, but none are tempted to spend the afternoon in the dunes, instead forgetting about sunscreen and of the sun baths.

“We really want the sun, we have been locked up at home for a long time, so we want to go out to the street, to the beach and lose our minds, forget the need to use a sunscreen and take out small children. be bald, “says the doctor.
Skin cancer is the only form of cancer that can be prevented if sunbathing is not abused. According to the doctor, it is not necessary to avoid the sun, but be careful, it is necessary.
“The sun is especially dangerous for children. Children under the age of two are banned from the sun more than is allowed. No matter how much sun we store until age 18, we will have such skin damage later on. When people under 18 years they do not see the sun or they take very little sun and only begin to sunbathe at an older age, their risk of developing skin cancer is lower than severe sunburn and sun exposure before the age of 18 ”, said Dr. J. Česienė.
Each year, about 1,800 people are diagnosed with skin cancer; in Lithuania, women are diagnosed with skin cancer more often than breast cancer.
