At an emergency meeting of the LKL Board held on Friday, 9 of the 12 Board members decided that Šiauliai Club has the right to continue participating in the Betsafe-LKL Championship after returning to self-isolation.
Fines are being issued this season
According to the website BasketNews.lt, representatives of Vilnius Rytas, Kaunas Žalgiris and Panevėžys Lietkabelis suggested that Šiauliai residents become five healthy players and integrate three youth pyramid basketball players. If not, these three clubs gave the Sun City team a technical defeat.
This practice was used in European tournaments, where cases of coronavirus in one team caused the players to isolate themselves and the rest to play.
During the season, when all the teams encountered COVID-19, the conditions were created to continue participating in the championship after returning from illness, so the proposal to apply a technical defeat to the Šiauliai team was not approved by a large majority.
The quarterfinals of the Rytas and Šiauliai teams will start next week:
- The first duel “Rytas” – “Šiauliai” will take place on May 20.
- The second Šiauliai-Rytas match will take place on May 22.
- If necessary, the third meeting will take place in Vilnius on May 23.
Due to the changed dates of the quarter-final series, the Betsafe-LKL semi-final schedule is also adjusted.
The first semifinal match is scheduled for May 24.
