Although the politician has set victory in the next municipal elections as the most important goal, political scientists point out that these elections are usually a success for the LSDP. At that time, the unification of party members, the ability to oppose both the peasants and the rulers, and the success of the Seimas elections, these issues will require great efforts.
Seeks to regain confidence
On Monday, V. Blinkevičiūtė herself commented on the Lietuvos Rytas television program “New Day” that more partisan votes were received due to increased awareness in the public space, due to work experience in the social field.
In which direction will the new leader turn the party wheel? The renewal of the LSDP, which began a few years ago, did not bring the party the expected success in the Seimas elections.
However, V. Blinkevičiūtė stressed that the municipal elections held two years ago were in favor of the Social Democrats, the most successful party of all. Elections to the European Parliament were also a success, but the party stumbled in the Seimas elections.
“As a current and newly elected leader, I promise that as a leader I will mobilize all the people so that our voter will once again believe in us that the Social Democrats are the only true left party in Lithuania that does not participate in populism but fights for the people.” said V.Blinkevičiūtė at the time.
When evaluating the possibilities of the Social Democrats joining the coalition agreement of the peasant and working class factions, V. Blinkevičiūtė stated that he believed that it was necessary to speak with various political parties, both from the opposition and from the ruling party.
“But you always have to know that there are certain red lines that we, as Social Democrats, have no right to cross,” said the politician.
The new party leader said he believed it was not necessary to sign a joint opposition agreement for cooperation, but that will be discussed in the party.
Not the most important indicator
On Sunday after the victory in the party elections, V. Blinkevičiūtė stated that now the most important work ahead is victory in the municipal elections of 2023.
However, political scientist Vytautas Isoda points out that Social Democrats have always performed well in municipal elections, so they would not draw conclusions about the party’s chances of these elections.
“It just came to our attention then. Social Democrats traditionally perform well in self-government, because they have their own traditional municipalities, which they win,” said V. Isoda.
“However, the fact that these municipalities can win again does not mean that their positions in national politics are changing very strongly,” he emphasized.
V. Isoda recalls that even during the last municipal elections, it seemed that the Social Democrats were recovering, so many also predicted success in the Seimas elections. And yet it meant little.
“In the municipal elections, in my opinion, they will be the first or second, but it is still very difficult to predict about the next elections to the Seimas,” predicted V. Isoda.
At the time, political scientist Šarūnas Liekis stated that the increasingly popular public election committees in municipal elections could significantly confuse the final picture.
A critical trump card
Political scientist Š.Liekis said that, as an observer from the side, V. Blinkevičiūtė’s victory in the presidential elections was not surprising, as she was much more active in the public space, speaking on more acute issues of political life.
“Obviously, in a context in which the popularity of the government falls every month, facing politicians is more attractive, especially for people who are frustrated with the policies that are being followed,” said the political scientist.
According to V. Isoda, the harsh criticisms of the Social Democrats to the rulers to succeed in the elections should continue.
“At least in the short term so that the party recovers its face. For a long time, under the leadership of Gintautas Paluckas, it was unclear whether they secretly supported the TS-LKD; they were in one boat, there was no clear opposition to the conservatives. At one point, scandals were heard about secret deals between Gabrielius Landsbergis and Gintautas Paluckas.
The sharpest criticism of the Government must, of course, be, as far as possible, with more substantive proposals on their part ”, he emphasized.
Opportunities for the future
While the peasants maintain their popularity and continue to lead among left-wing voters, ŠLiekis does not rule out that the Social Democrats can still compete. According to the political scientist, in Lithuania there are more than 30 percent. undecided voters: they are the mobile electorate that can normally be taken.
“Many electorates overlap, and generally not only the ideological position, center-right or center-left wins, but activity, showing initiative, having constructive proposals, people generally like it. It is not ideological, but the criticism of specific politicians that attracts everyone ”, Š.Liekis commented.
According to V. Isoda, the success of the Social Democrats in the Seimas elections will depend on their attitude and work in the Seimas, on how they will be able to maintain their distance from the peasants and oppose not only the Government.
“My advice to them is that they also try to oppose the peasants, so that the voters, in the first place, separate and focus on them,” advised the political scientist.
In evaluating the new leader’s chances of leading the party to success, V. Isoda declared that V. Blinkevičiūtė was the best of his options. According to him, experience shows that politicians who have returned from the European Parliament or positions in the European Commission see themselves above national politics: the political scientist recalls the example of Dalia Grybauskaitė.
“The leader should express herself as much as possible – a lot of people might have forgotten her. She should be in Lithuania more often, appear on television screens and strive for people to start seeing her as an alternative prime minister to Ingrida Šimonyte, and now not look at Saulius Skvernelis, ”said V. Isoda.
At that time, during the election of the president of the LSDP, various letters to the parties appeared in the public sphere, the launching of complaints and the internal tensions and intrigues named by the party members themselves did not go unnoticed. How deep is this division of the party and will it not set foot for the new leader?
Š.Liekis stated that he believes that such disagreements are common to all parties.
“The question remains to what extent the sense of self-security forces party members to remain within the organizational framework in which they find themselves. If any political force is in danger of crumbling, its capabilities will be reduced, it is often learned from past mistakes, and differences are resolved within their own framework, ”Š.Liekis said.
The LSDP president-elect will take office on May 29 and a party convention will be held on that day. 56 percent voted for the politician. of almost 8 thousand. Social Democrats who participated in the elections.
