The revival of Kaunas parks continues, this time maintenance work begins on the Neris embankment park.
It is planned to rebuild the existing and create new recreational spaces, renew the small architecture and improve the network of trails. Even more attention is paid to the vegetation of the park. The city will allocate more than 1.3 million hectares for complex reconstruction works of 20.7 hectares. euros. The works are scheduled to be completed by the middle of next year.
Get started with trail management
“For several years in a row, we have been striving to organize parks and squares in Kaunas so that they are attractive and accessible to all. These green areas should not only decorate the city, but should also serve for comfortable leisure and quality recreation. Specialists pay special attention to vegetation, preserving and expanding it. The Neris Embankment Park is no exception: a number of complex changes will be implemented to make this place even more welcoming to residents, ”said Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis.
In Vilijampolė, in the park on the right bank of the Neris, the works are based on the renovation of the network of pedestrian paths. The 6 paths leading to the park will be renovated. Depending on where visitors are most likely to walk, trampled tracks will be covered with a hard surface.
The bike path that winds through the entire park will be exclusively for cyclists – cyclists and scooters. Next to it, a new 1.5 m pedestrian lane will be built. This solution aims to separate the intermingled flows and ensure safe movement for all.
The cycling and pedestrian route between the P. Vileišis and Varniai bridges will be framed with 6 m high luminaires, which will improve visibility during the dark hours of the day. Additional accents in the park will be the decorative cubes, which will illuminate the pavement on the side pathways, and the renovated elements of the small architecture: benches, hammocks and trash cans.
These green areas should not only decorate the city, but should also serve for comfortable leisure and quality recreation.
The first disc golf course
The rebuilt Neris Embankment Park will welcome Kaunas residents with a much broader range of leisure spaces. At present, the children’s playgrounds and outdoor fitness areas will be dismantled and brought to the city’s community playgrounds, and modern sports and play equipment will appear in the most convenient locations in the park. There are also areas for lovers of extreme sports with bicycles, skateboards, skates or skateboards.
The Neris Embankment Park will be the first in Kaunas, where citizens will be able to try the game of disc golf, which is becoming increasingly popular in Lithuania. There will be up to 18 special bags in the area, into which plastic plates can be thrown. Trees, bushes, the natural terrain of the park will become a challenge even for seasoned enthusiasts of this game.
Vacationers who yearn for peace can settle on the banks of the River Neris, where there will be recreation areas suitable both to sit quietly with a book and for a summer picnic.
The renovated park will attract not only locals but also visitors from more remote areas. From Union Square, a path will take you to a new observation deck, inviting you to admire the slopes of Žaliakalnis, the panorama of the old town and the Nerimi that flows here.
More greenery
The rebirth of the Neris embankment park is inseparable from the arrangement of vegetation here: nature management work is planned in the park – tree pruning dating back several decades. At the same time, it is planned to remove almost 200 invasive ash maples, which obscure and hinder the growth of protected trees in the park. They will be replaced by even more valuable deciduous trees.

All the edges of the park near the street of the Neris embankment will be planted with hedges of tall bushes and other vegetation, which will suppress the noise emanating from the street, ”said Radeta Savickienė, head of the Department of Environmental Protection of the municipality of Kaunas , on the green. solutions.
By separating the park from the street with a green wall, it is hoped to create favorable conditions for the life, passage and feeding of the small birds that live in the park. Their variety here is quite wide: teats, sparrows, bushes, thorns, nightingales, and others.
After the renovation of the territory, hazelnuts, hawthorn, white and red dogwood will be planted in various places in the park. Spaces near playgrounds and playgrounds will also be decorated with many of your favorite flowering plants – simple, flexible oils.
