Colorado Springs police arrived on duty at a mobile home park shortly after midnight (after 9 a.m. Lithuania), where they found six adults shot and a man seriously injured.
The latter was taken to a local hospital but died of his injuries.
According to a preliminary study, a man started shooting after several families got together to celebrate a birthday in one of the mobile homes.
“The suspect, a guy from one of the victims, entered the area, entered and began shooting at the people who attended the party, and then took his own life,” police said in a statement.
“It just came to our knowledge then [incidentą] to establish a motive, ”he adds.
None of the children at the party were injured, police said. Minors are cared for by their relatives. The identities of the victims are not disclosed.
“From the officers who responded to the shooting to the investigators still on the scene, we are extremely shocked,” said Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski. “I hope this never happens in your community.”
Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers said the community mourned this “senseless act of violence” and asked for prayers for the victims, their loved ones and officials who responded to the incident.
A woman who lived in the mobile home park told The Denver Post that she woke up to the sound of many gunshots and thought it was thunder.
The Colorado Springs newspaper, The Gazette, reported that family and friends of the victims gathered Sunday afternoon to pay tribute to them at the cabin where the shooting occurred.
It was the third mass shooting in Colorado Springs since October 2015, including a bloody incident on Halloween that year and an armed attack on Planned Parenthood in November of that year, local media reported.
There have been several shootings in the United States in recent months, including the FedEx parcel services complex in Indianapolis, an office building in California, a grocery store in Colorado, and several spas in Atlanta.
US President Joe Biden said last month that the country’s “epidemic” of gun violence was an “international disgrace.”
