On Wednesday, a meeting of the Commission for Emergency Situations was held in the Klaipeda city municipality to prepare for the summer season. The services briefed the chairman of the commission on how the port city was preparing for the summer.

While work on the seashore is still ongoing, the beaches are expected to open to vacationers on May 15. According to Olegas Mariničius, Director of Klaipėda Beaches, it will take another 2-3 days, and all the equipment, exchange huts and benches will be taken to the beaches.

An intensive selection of lifeguards is currently underway and two new boats have been purchased.

As the greatest innovation, O. Mariničius presented the new beach that will be built between the First and Second Melnrage. A new beach with lifeguards on duty would have all the necessary infrastructure when a new parking lot was installed on Pajūrio Street. It has been observed that there has been a significant increase in the number of vacationers at this location.

“Smiltyne is ready for the season. Only the speakers are missing. It still takes two to three days to prepare Melnrage and Girulis,” said O. Mariničius.

In total, there will be 12 seaside rescue posts within the city limits. The beach sauna will not be open yet due to a stricter quarantine.

Eager is dane

However, services concern not only entertainers by the sea, but also people having fun in the city center. What will be this summer will also depend on the limitations of the quarantine.

According to Marius Garbenis, director of the Klaipėda County Fire and Rescue Board, the risk of people relaxing again after lifting the restrictions has been assessed. Last year I had to go several times to rescue the drowned who had fallen in Denmark in the center of the city.

Klaipeda police officers also spoke about possible risks. This summer, there will also be an increased focus on electric scooter drivers, and measures are planned. In addition, attention will be paid to controlling noise and alcohol consumption in public places.

According to Alfonsas Motuzas, head of the Klaip County Police Chief’s Station, da, it will be possible to predict what summer it will be only after evaluating the quarantine regime. Now, according to him, officials pay close attention to the quarantine regime, its compliance.

Reaching Smiltyne is more difficult

Although the summer season is already being felt, access to the Curonian Spit by car remains difficult due to the reconstruction of the Naujoji Smiltyne ferry.

There are currently only two cash registers open. Traffic from Klaipeda to the ferry is hampered because it takes place on only two lanes.

This worries not only foresters but firefighters as well. They fear that in the event of an accident, the flow of cars could cause inconvenience in the rush to put out the fire.

Company director Darius Undžys stated that the first stage of the reconstruction is scheduled to be completed in June. Then there would be six passenger lanes. “All the ferries are ready, one is still at the dock, but it will be ready for the season. We are waiting for the new ferry in July. Also, this season is much more pleasant for the Curonian Spit queues. Then we can work faster.” said D. Andžys.
