“I think this ring is reminiscent of the early Kretingan Franciscans. Someone lost it 300-400 years ago, and we discovered it,” said Jurgis Sadauskas, an archaeologist at the Small Community Research Institute, who said the ring was found at a depth of about one meter, where a layer of black earth of approximately 20 cm have survived.

According to J. Sadauskas, this is the intact surface that people walked on a few hundred years ago, when the city of Kretinga was being built.

The parish priest of the Catholic parish of Kretinga, the Franciscan Juozapas Marija Žukauskas, believes that the ring could have been worn more by a lay Franciscan than by a monk: Francis did not take a vow of poverty or wear rings.

Archaeologists have still discovered a wooden velvet and belt from the same period (17-18 centuries) in the old town.
