It is reported that on Friday the first reports were received from poultry farmers about the sudden appearance of dead birds. Buyers informed SFVS specialists that a sudden delay began in both last week’s purchase and earlier rearing of the newly purchased poultry.
During epizootic investigations by SFVS inspectors, preliminary data revealed that the birds were purchased from illegal vendors in Maišiagala, Rudamina or Lentvaris, who had not registered their activities and had no documents confirming the acquisition and origin of the birds. Several of these providers have already been identified by the SFVS and will be subject to the corresponding sanctions.
“Once the avian influenza virus has been detected on the poultry farm, all surviving birds have been destroyed and safely disposed of to prevent the spread of the disease. In the case of the farms affected by the virus, the Chicken coops are cleaned and disinfected, and all necessary measures are taken to prevent the virus from spreading to other poultry places ”, indicates the service.
According to Darius Remeika, director of the SFVS, the irresponsible behavior of some poultry sellers is worrying at this time, when the number of detected cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza in European countries is increasing every day.
“In addition, when birds are transported from high-risk areas to Lithuania by illegal means, the carriers transport them without any documents and deliberately choose less public, remote places, access to commercial cities of small cities, reach customers by prior calls.” says D. Remeika.
On April 24, by order of the Director of the SFVS, controls over live bird trade sites were tightened. Over the weekend, Vilnius County inspectors inspected markets and their entrances, as well as commercial sites where live birds could be traded. Violations have been identified at the entrances to the Rudamina market, where the illegal trade in live birds – chickens and quails was carried out by unauthorized traders and will be subject to administrative sanctions. Furthermore, SFVS officials identified another chicken trader, who did not have documents for the purchase of birds and the necessary permits, during an inspection of the Širvintos market.
During the weekends, inspections were also carried out in a market owned by Kalvarijos Komunalininkas in Vilnius, during which it was established that six people were trading in this place, three of whom did not have veterinary approval. Another 7 people exchanged pigeons and also did not provide the inspectors with the necessary documents, one person exchanged pigeons outside the market area. Unexpected inspections were also carried out in the district municipalities of Panevėžys, Tauragė and Šalčininkai, there was no trade in live birds in these places.
