However, the test that awaits this summer will probably not be the same: due to repair works, the main artery near the old town is planned to be closed for three months: it is planned to completely renovate the ring of Kaunas castle and its accesses and repair the P. Vileišis bridge. Work will begin in mid-May and will continue until September 1.
The busy street is temporarily closed
The upcoming large-scale works will require understanding not only from drivers, but also from public transport passengers. In addition, navigation skills will have to be used, since the traffic in the so-called Kaunas Castle Ring and its accesses will be completely closed. Temporary changes to the trolleybus and bus routes are expected, which will be extended and lengthened accordingly.
Still, the armor is worth it. The most intense urban transport hub will be safer and more convenient for all road users.
“The so-called Kaunas Castle Rotunda has not seen such great changes in recent decades. Since the P. Vileišis bridge has to be managed due to the warp threads, it is the best solution to do everything at the same time.
We understand that the upcoming changes will cause a lot of inconvenience to all road users. However, the heat of work is forecast for the summer, when the number of cars in the city will decrease significantly. There will be no better time for such a big project, now or I don’t know when. A hot summer and extraordinary tasks await travelers, so we want to ask all Kaunas residents for patience and understanding, ”said Aloyzas Pakalniškis, Head of the City Management Department of the Municipality of Kaunas.
The management plan will cover several areas: the deformation joints of the P. Vileišis Bridge, the Kaunas Castle Ring, Šaukliai and St. Causeways and sidewalks of Gertrūdos Street will be repaired. It is also planned to change the contact trolleybus network.
Priority is given to public transport
After the renovation, public transport will improve: it is planned to install an additional A lane before entering the intersection of Šauklių street from Šv. Gertrūdos st. As a result, buses and trolleybuses will no longer have to line up with cars. The Kaunas Castle stop will be much more spacious for public transport and passengers.
The security islands in the roundabout will also be increased. Its function is to avoid dangerous and unauthorized maneuvers of vehicles in the ring.
“Everything is done with the simple purpose of fundamentally renovating the worn-out infrastructure and, at the same time, increasing safety, especially in the busy roundabout and the streets next to it,” said Martynas Matusevičius, Head of the Department of Management of Transport and Traffic of Municipality of Kaunas.
More pedestrian facilities
During the review, Kauno Vandenys and Kauno Energija will join forces: heating and sewage networks will be renewed in the modified area. Kauno autobusai will pay attention to the renewal of the catenary network, and the Kauno public lighting will install modern LED luminaires.
Pedestrians will be much more comfortable, sidewalks will be wide. Gertrūdos street from Šauklių str. all the way to Liberty Avenue.
“The sidewalk will extend to the side of the road from St. Intersection of Gertrūdos and Gimnazijos streets to Laisvės Alley. With the implementation of the changes, foot traffic will be distributed evenly. It will also be a good boost for the companies located on these streets, ”added A. Pakalniškis.
S t. The intersection of Gertrūdos and Šauklių streets: the crosswalk will be moved to a safety island, thus creating a convenient connection for the disabled and cyclists. Until now, the stairs installed just before the crossing have been an obstacle for these road users.
In addition, innovations are planned for St. At the intersection of Gertrūdos and Gimnazijos streets: the right turn, towards Karaliaus Mindaugas avenue, will be reduced from two to one lane of travel by installing an unregulated crosswalk. In both cases, the planned changes will also ensure better vehicle performance.
Review worth about 3 million. The limited company Kauno Tiltai will carry out the tender.
Both the P. Vileišis bridge and the roundabout and its entrances, the traffic closure is scheduled as of May 17. until the end of summer. In the near future, residents will be further informed about temporary traffic management procedures, schemes and changes in public transport routes.
