The Lithuanian Genocide and Resistance Research Center (LGGRTC) is carefully reviewing the biography of each of the fighters carved here, looking for historical sites.
“It turns out that the man killed a party worker in domestic circumstances and then went out or tried to go to the partisans, was prosecuted and convicted. As the situation was not seen in a very critical way, that person was found on that wall, there are such and similar cases, there are, ”explained Rytas Narvydas, head of the Center’s Special Investigation Division, to LNK.
So far 103 biographies out of almost 200 have been examined. After the survey, it will be answered how many surnames engraved in stone are worthy of such a memory. It is already clear that some names will not remain.
“As much as possible, I think there are a dozen people who might have to think about changing the names or removing them altogether,” Narvydas said.
It was previously announced that the investigation was scheduled to be completed at the end of last year, however work was halted due to the coronavirus after files were closed.
The historian, current Minister of National Defense Arvydas Anušauskas, who previously worked for LGGRTC, recalls that before the names were inscribed in the former KGB building, the biographies were thoroughly reviewed.
“These were people who participated in resistance battles. A careful selection has been made as to whether there may be any errors or additional information; I certainly won’t say it now. I only confirm that the selection was made in due time, “said A. Anušauskas.
The Center will not reveal any surnames yet, they will be released only after full investigation. However, A. Anušauskas has no doubts about any surname.
“I would like to emphasize that the MGB who were shot in 1944-1947 – there was a review of each surname, a biography, a search, a search for data that did not include people involved in Holocaust actions, collaborators of the Nazi government or simply soldiers of the occupation army, “said A. Anušauskas.

“My task is not to spoil how wonderful nature has created,” said Gitenis Umbrasas, an artist who recorded surnames.
You are now drowning in other jobs, but remember that jobs were rushed at the time.
“It just came to our knowledge then. Anyway, normally one stage of the work is done, then another. And all three stages were carried out at the same time, the house is being built almost from the chimney,” said the artist.
Mr. Umbras did not hide his sympathy for the country, although he should have some advice if it is really decided to remove some of their surnames.
“There is no dialogue, maybe there was quarantine, maybe some intrigue, adventures – I don’t know, nobody invited me. Unfinished work in Tuskulėnai, not very interesting, at least no one spoke to me. It would be interesting to talk about all these jobs with the management ”, said G. Umbrasas.

When the investigation is complete, the center staff cannot predict, only adding that only one employee is currently analyzing the bios.
“In a year, after 10, I could examine 12 people. It would be a long time here, but if we had the opportunity to involve more employees in that work, that work would accelerate,” admitted R. Narvydas.
The surname of the controversial Jonas Noreika, General Vėtra, is engraved on the former KGB building.
