As already announced, P.Motiejūnas, the director of Kaunas “Žalgiris”, and the leaders of six other Euroleague clubs met secretly on Sunday in Athens and discussed the unsatisfactory leadership of the Euroleague and the idea of reproaching its president Jordi Bertomeu.
Representatives of Kaunas “Žalgiris”, CSKA of Moscow, “Olympia” of Milan, “Maccabi” of Tel Aviv, “Piraeus” “Olympiakos”, “Athens” “Panathinaikos” and “Anadolu Efes” of Istanbul met in Athens.
It was reported that the leaders of seven teams with long-term contracts with the Euroleague interacted at the Syggrou Avenue Hotel and in a few hours of conversations they expressed doubts about the structure, operations and financial management of the Euroleague.
One of the main problems was money: the Euroleague makes little contribution to the financing of the product provided by the teams.
The clubs would like to receive much more financial support. This was officially stated several times during club leaders’ meetings at the EuroLeague venue, but Bertomeu never answered the question of when teams will be able to count on more tournament money.
It has been said that it is necessary to replace the president of the Euroleague, who has led the organization for more than 20 years.
And it is that already on Thursday, according to the SDNA, the Euroleague headquarters in Barcelona received statements from the club in which they expressed distrust towards Bertomeu and assured that it will not allow him to automatically extend his mandate one more year from May 10.
The league’s statutes, approved by the 11 founders of the Euroleague, the basketball team, state that the president’s term is automatically extended annually if no one claims until May 10.
According to the statutes, distrust in the coach should not be expressed in a joint letter, but must be expressed by each member individually, so on Thursday the Euroleague received notifications from the seven teams separately.
The Greek portal quotes one of the letters: “Dear Jordi. With this letter, we would like to inform you that we do not consent to its automatic extension for one more year. “
If Mr. Bertomeu does not find two clubs that publicly oppose his disagreement, Mr. Bertomeu’s work in the Euroleague will be completed and a new leader will be elected. According to the SDNA, there has been no clearer distrust in Bertomeu’s work throughout the 20 years of the Euroleague.
If the censorship letters are not revoked before May 10, only the clubs and leagues will have the right to decide, and Bertomeu’s term will be suspended.
It is therefore natural that the president of the Euroleague has already rushed to seek support from the other founders of the tournament and is trying to turn the tide of events in a direction that is beneficial to him.
The Eurohoops news portal announces that a special meeting of 11 Euroleague licensed clubs will be planned at the initiative of J. Bertomeu.
According to the original plan, this meeting was to take place after the season, during the summer, but the current situation forced J. Bertomeu to make changes.
The president is expected to seek the support of the leaders of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Baskonia in Vitoria and Fenerbahce in Istanbul, Turkey, who did not attend the meeting in Athens.
Catalan J. Bertomeu, 62, is one of the creators and creators of the modern Euroleague and has led it since 2000.
