“The volume of people being tested is insignificantly small and that makes it seem like everything is fine, and that the good is definitely not. I don’t see any good results, a breakthrough. When it comes to vaccination, the vaccines really are and are still in storage, we also see a communication crisis with one of the vaccines, we see a change in the priority list, ”said S. Skvernelis on Delfi TV.
“The restrictions that are still in force indicate that there is no result. Not only does the example of Lithuania show that these measures no longer work, we have to think in different ways,” he added.
According to S. Skvernel, the measures to control the coronavirus at this time should not be the same as in the previous fight, because the situation has changed significantly.
“When we faced a pandemic, it was a completely new situation, nobody knew who was here through the virus, how it would spread, why it would spread, who was protecting. Now the situation is completely different, a lot of research, experience from other countries, which shows how it can be managed successfully, what is the reaction of society, “said the former prime minister.
“When there are so many people who have been sick, there is another situation, because once enough immunity has been formed it can no longer be managed by the same means as during the first wave. We have heard that there will be a new strategy, it is not there yet, “he said.
According to S. Skvernel, ways must be found to open up more activities to people who have been sick, vaccinated, also through tests.
“You have to stop being bullied, you have to encourage and motivate people. Increasing the scope of testing could be one of the means to encourage people to participate in some activity. I once offered theater. If you have immunity, you have become ill or have been vaccinated and are tested, you can get a theater ticket electronically by purchasing a ticket, where [taikomos] ALL SAFETY MEASURES. Exactly the same with other activities, sports clubs, concerts and the like. Even with outdoor cafes, this can be the case, ”explained S. Skvernelis.
According to him, the situation is not facilitated by the fact that the coalition partners spread different knowledge. S. Skvernelis says there is generally a lack of more active government activities.
“The Minister of Foreign Affairs is really visible, he represents a clear direction of foreign policy, which is formed by the Union of the Fatherland. You continue to see some of the efforts of the Minister of Social Security and Labor, and it becomes very difficult to point out anything else. If we have to evaluate the works, let’s see how much this Government has presented, no matter how crisis, specific bills, proposals. There is basically nothing, “said S. Skvernelis.
“Various ministries are basically dealing with direct issues related to the pandemic, and what is everyone else doing? <…> I see that some ministers still do not understand today that they are ministers, ”he said.
Hot tub: the government cannot propose miracle measures
Andrius Kubilius, member of the European Parliament and member of the Union of the Homeland-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), stressed that the fight against the pandemic is not just a matter for the Government.
“The government cannot find any miraculous means to overcome a pandemic, the only way to combat it is to get vaccinated or isolate it,” he told the program.
Andrius Kubilius
According to A. Kubilius, disputes in the coalition on how to proceed should not be seen as signs of a political crisis and overall, in his opinion, Lithuania is being handled quite successfully.
“Yes, the numbers have started to grow, but they are not yet in a phase of uncontrolled growth. Vaccination is successful enough, effective. New methods may be lacking to convince a person over 65 to get vaccinated, but there is no way to deliver unused vaccines and Lithuania will be completely unable to use them. These figures show that the government has managed to work well so far, ”explained the MEP.
He said the government didn’t have much choice about how to proceed, and public outrage was high in other states as well.
Every quarantine relief often ends with a rapid rise in numbers. When Lithuania began to consider facilities, other countries made decisions to close as much as possible. This is how both Estonia and Poland behaved, “said A. Kubilius.
“Now all governments experience the exact same thing whether we look at Germany or Slovakia or our Polish, Latvian and Estonian neighbors. The public outrage is really high and it does not depend at all on how governments deal with a pandemic. just a big problem for people and they have nothing to do with it, ”said A. Kubilius on Delfi TV.
