Karbauskis: Conservatives prepare a Presidency seat for Gabriel Landsbergis

“Conservatives have engaged in power games with the president. All of this is happening at a time when the state is suffocating for the fourth month in a row and they cannot decide for themselves on vaccination strategies and plans, while depositing their confidence in vaccines after uncritical and ever-changing communications. Yet even then, it is more important to the conservatives themselves and their establishment in power, clearing the way for “their” candidate for the 2024 presidential election by any means, “wrote R. Karbauskis on Facebook.

According to him, one of the measures is to prevent Mr Nausėda from participating in the European Council.

“It is important to mention that for many years the Conservatives ‘enjoyed’ Grybauskaitė’s participation in the European Council, and suddenly President Nausėda’s visits to European Council meetings became ‘inappropriate’,” said R. Karbauskis.

According to the politician, “the political removal of the president from office is very cynical.”

“The Constitution of Lithuania does not provide that the Seimas or the Government, through their adopted legal acts, may restrict or restrict in any way the constitutional powers of the President of the Republic to resolve the main issues of Lithuanian foreign policy, and thus form foreign policy (article 84 of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania).
Nor does the Constitution confer powers on the Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Committees with regard to the President who attends the European Council.

However, these committees have been closed since the public meeting in 2021. On March 24, for the first time in Lithuania’s history, it began to provide recommendations to the president to go or not to go. It seems that even the rulers realized that the committees exceeded their powers, which is why they wanted to rotate so quietly without arguing with the Seimas members that a separate question was not even asked during the committee meeting; some committee members understood why they voted only when the press releases appeared, stated R. Karbauskis.

See the behind-the-scenes plan

The LVŽS leader sees behind-the-scenes motives in conservative initiatives.

“There is no doubt that such manipulations in the committees of the Seimas are an introduction to accustom the public to the fact that the Seimas decides whether the president performs the functions assigned to him by the Constitution. And it is already clear that next time the committees of the Seimas led by the rulers will decide that the president stays home and I Šimonytė leaves.

However, this is not enough to strengthen our powers, not to help the conservatives involved in the pandemic. They no longer hide the need to change the order of the presidential elections. It is said that, for the first time in 30 years, the presidential election procedure was allegedly out of step with his mandate. Therefore, according to conservatives, the president should not be elected by universal suffrage by all the Lithuanian people, but in the Seimas, ”said R. Karbauskis.

In his opinion, his real proposal is related to changes in the electoral system.

So they propose that the Seimas elect the President of Lithuania! Conservatives don’t even hide these plans by showing them publicly and creating task forces at the Seimas. One thing is clear: the realization of such plans would help them to finally get rid of the completely ideologically foreign President G. Nausėda, who became the last obstacle to announcing the dictatorship of the agenda causing chaos in the state. If they managed to push through this amendment, which fundamentally changes the presidential election, in 2024, at the end of his term, the conservatives and liberals Seimas could still do what Landsberg did not do even with the best efforts after many generations: Landsberg, right, not a grandfather, and now a grandson, to be pushed to the presidents ”, wrote R. Karbauskis.

In his opinion, this trend threatens democracy.

Although we all understand perfectly that G. Landsbergis would never be elected president if the Lithuanian people did not vote for the political situation of the conservatives and liberals in the Seimas.
The expulsion of the president of the European Council, the plans to change the order of his elections are not coincidences, they are already a threat to democracy.

By strengthening their powers, the rulers will look at nothing, and strengthening their powers by concentrating the entire government in one hand is not at all reminiscent of the western state government, which Lithuania has always tried to be. The freedom of the state, for which all the people of Lithuania fought, is being destroyed by the conservatives. His hands also caress the heads of liberals, who with their nonsense divert attention from even more serious things, which are handled conservatively by conservatives … ”, wrote R. Karbauskis.
