“Sviatlana Cichanouskaja contacted Belarusbank to find out why her account was blocked. The bank employee agreed:”[Tai buvo padaryta] take steps to freeze funds belonging to natural persons involved in terrorist activities [asmenų] list, ”said a statement posted on the Chichanouskaya channel on the Telegram social platform.

Representatives of the former candidate for the presidency of Belarus quoted Cichanouskaya that the only funds transferred to that bank account in the latter was a social benefit for a disabled child: 223 Belarusian rubles (72 euros) per month.

Early Monday, Pavel Latuška, a member of the presidium of the opposition Coordinating Council, also announced that his account with the Bank of Belarus had been blocked.

Last week, the Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB) added Chichanouskaya, Latask and 15 other Belarusian citizens to the list of “organizations and individuals involved in terrorist activities.”

According to the KGB, documents were also prepared on the extradition of S. Cichanouskaya and P. Latuška from Lithuania and Poland, respectively.

Belarus has been rocked for several months by massive protests against the results of the presidential elections on August 9, announced by Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who has led the country since 1994.

Her opponents say the election was rigged and that the real winner is political rookie S. Cichanouskaya, who is running for her jailed husband.

Belarusian security forces have cracked down on protesters, detained them and forced opposition leaders to flee the country.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of Lukashenko, the release of political prisoners and new elections.

But the protest movement was gradually repressed, with mass arrests. Hundreds of them allege that the detainees were tortured.
