The speedometer on the Castle Bridge, which had only been running for three months, is already bitter for the townspeople. With the speed limit lowered to 30 km / h, people began to complain about such a drastic traffic restriction.
At the meeting of the Traffic Safety Commission, Klaipėda Deputy Mayor Arūnas Barbšys proposed to increase the permitted speed to the usual one in the city: 50 km / h.
“Pilies and Naujoji Uosto streets can be driven up to 50 km / h. speed, and on the Castle Bridge – up to 30 km / h. This was decided because freight traffic was allowed here and is not happening at the moment. I would like to propose to the commission to set 50 km / h. speed or at least increase it to 40 km / h ”, said A.Barbšys.
Discussions have arisen because the bridge itself is elevated and visibility for drivers is limited.
Rimantas Mockus, head of the Klaipėda Municipality’s Department of Transport, offered to stay at 40 km / h. speed.
Mindaugas Džermeika, Chief of the Road Police Service of the Klaipėda County Police Chief Commissariat, noted that there were serious disasters at this location.
“We see that discrepancy: 50 km / h are allowed throughout the section. Speed and need to brake on the bridge. Logic may really be lacking. The decision came from complaints from residents who were confident that the noise was caused by high-speed cars. It has also been mentioned that heavy transport damages the bridge. However, in this place excess speed is recorded, even driving at 80 km / h. speed. And a car crashed into the theater building , killing a person in a traffic accident. This time the flight was 120 km / h. speed, “recalled M. Dzermeika.
A police spokesman suggested staying at 40 mph.
The Road Safety Commission approved the proposal to increase the speed limit at Puente del Castillo to 40 km / h.
In the near future, the meter will be adjusted, promising to change the road signs.
