At the first hearing in the criminal case, prosecutor Tomas Čepelionis read the accusation, and Ignė Šakalienė, accused of murder, desecration of bodies, and production and possession of false documents, gave her testimony.
At the beginning of the hearing, the request of the murdered daughter from a private hearing was also considered. Although such a request was accepted by all parties to the case, the panel of judges decided not to grant the request because there was no legal reason to do so.
The indictment claims that the woman, who was born in 1933, was killed on July 17 of last year by hitting at least 41 blows with a sharp object on various parts of the body, then the body was flooded with flammable liquid and caught fire.
The defendant I.Šakalienė fully admitted her guilt. She said that she had been receiving periodic treatment in psychiatric institutions for the past twelve years and said that the last six months before the event had been particularly difficult for her.
The woman said she had regularly taken “a little more than prescribed by her doctor,” Xanax, other antidepressants and hypnotics. She told the court that she did not remember if she was also taking medication on the day of the murder.
The day of the murder, he said he was driving a car when he saw an elderly woman standing at the bus stop. I.Šakalienė stated that he had stopped and offered to transport the woman he had first seen, then entered and sat in the passenger seat.
“I don’t like to carry passengers myself, but this time I took them,” said the accused.
According to I.Šakalienė, while driving a car, he heard a vibrating phone in a handbag in the back seat, so he stopped on the side of the road and tried to pick it up, but the first thing he grabbed was a paper-cut knife.
The woman said she didn’t know why, but then she started stabbing the passenger with a knife. He also said he did not remember the first hit.
“I realized I was doing something terrible, cosmically terrible, and I stopped,” he said.
Later he said that he had gone to a nearby forest and decided to dispose of his body in a small crevice.
“That body needs help somewhere, throughout the forest, I just went as far as possible (…) I broke a kind of willow tree and put it on that woman, because I was very afraid to look at everything,” I said. Šakalienė.
The defendant told the court that he did not want to desecrate the remains of those killed, he just wanted to “hide, take it off his head”,
“I admit that such action was technically, but I really had no intention of despising his body (…) I just wanted to destroy the situation itself, the horror itself. I thought of nothing more than to erase the situation from my head. It’s like denying it, it’s like I’m burning it off the face of the earth and it didn’t happen, “he said.
I.Šakalienė later said that when he returned home and noticed that the blood of the murdered woman had been left in the passenger’s place, he cleaned it and burned the used gloves and the garbage bag. She told the court what she had done to keep her little son from seeing the blood.
Later she said that she went out to the store, and when she returned she had already found many police officers in the house, who arrested her.
Judge Jurgita Kolyčienė then asked the accused what his reaction was to the fact that the relatives of the murdered asked the court to sentence them to a total of 240,000. material and non-material damage.
“It is difficult and unethical to argue. Of course, I am afraid there will be such large sums,” said I. Šakalienė.
She also stated that she hoped that when she went to the Panevėžys Women’s Prison, she would be able to work and compensate for this damage.
I. Šakalienė’s arrest was also discussed at this meeting, as the current arrest expires on Wednesday.
Prosecutor T. Cepelionis asked the court to extend the detention for another three months.
“I would definitely like a more forgiving remand. I do not intend to hide from the police or the police. I am released by strong social ties,” replied I.Šakalienal to the prosecutor’s request.
His lawyer also asked that the detention not be continued, saying it was “easier to prepare for the trial when you are free.”
The court promises to issue a decision on the remand measure later Wednesday.
The next hearing in this case is scheduled for July 13, in which he intends to question the victims.
