Vilnius, which is growing rapidly, stands out with the highest number of students (64 thousand) and will continue to grow: the analysis carried out by the municipality showed that by 2025. The number of students will increase by about 14 thousand, that is, it will reach the less to 78 thousand. Today, the City Council approved the decision to open 8 more new schools in Vilnius in the coming years. This is just one part of the entire planned school transformation.

“Vilnius’s population is growing and the number of children is growing very fast – there are almost twice as many three-year-olds as there are seventeen-year-olds, so we face a major challenge: creating the conditions for children to go to school. close to their homes. With the approval of the Council today, we will open up to 8 new schools in the city by 2025: 2 kindergartens-schools, 1 elementary school, 3 progymnasium and 2 gyms, “said Tomas Gulbinas, deputy mayor and director of school Network Transformation Working Group.

Schools are established where they are most needed

New educational institutions will be built in those areas that are expanding extremely fast. Two kindergartens-schools – in Perkūnkiemis and Tarandė, one primary school – in Pilaitė. The objective is to establish 3 progymnasiums: in Antakalnis, Bajorai and Pavilnis (Neighborhood of the signatories). A contract has already been signed with the builders of the gymnasium on Tolminkiemio Street (Pilaitė), and another gymnasium is planned to open in the Verkiai nursing home in the near future.

About 1,000 students will study in the new Pilaitė gymnasium, in the annex of the progymnasium in Jerusalem – 300, in the progymnasium in Mykolas Romeris – 600, and the Perkūnkiemi kindergarten school will have 500 children (300 primary and 200 kindergarten). All these projects have already started, but the implementation stages are different.

In the future Tarandė kindergarten, 500 children (300 from primary school and 200 from kindergarten) will be able to study. In the progymnasium in Bajorai – 700, in the gymnasium in Verkiai – 800, in the primary school in Pilaitė – 400 children, and in the progymnasium in Pavilnis – including 800 residents of Vilnius. According to current plans, the progymnasium in Bajorai and the primary school in Pilaitė could open their doors in 2024, other educational institutions – in 2025.

Vilnius municipal education specialists, council members, architects, lawyers and principals worked on the reorganization of the school network.
