Vaida Budrienė, communication manager of the retail chain Iki, says that buyers have liked these eggs very much during the Easter period: data shows that sales of quail eggs increase almost 3 times before Easter, according to a statement from press.
Quail eggs
“People’s interest in quail eggs is constantly growing and this is evidenced by their growing sales. Of course, the Easter period is very different: they end up in shopping carts very often. Our network works with local suppliers to ensure a continuous supply of quail eggs. These exceptional little eggs look in their own right, which is why they are increasingly becoming a festive table decoration, “says V. Budrienė.
Quail eggs – and during Easter
Daiva Urbonavičiūtė, who runs one of the most modern quail farms in Lithuania, which supplies eggs to IKI ūkis, says that quail eggs can be used wherever we use chicken eggs. These are both pastries and salads, meat dishes. Interest in quail eggs in Lithuania is growing, which, according to D. Urbonavičiūtė, also changes established Easter traditions.
Quail eggs
“In the past, quail eggs during Easter were the exception rather than the rule, but today more and more people are decorating their festive table with these eggs. We see this both in partner orders and when listening to comments from friends, acquaintances. Some people buy quail eggs only at Easter, others throughout the year, but their popularity is only growing, there is hardly any doubt about that, ”says the woman.
Because quail eggs look like painted eggs in appearance, people often don’t repaint them during Easter because they look great and are natural.
Quail eggs are part of oriental culture
According to the farmer, eating quail eggs comes from the culture of Southeast Asia, where this product is an indispensable part of the diet due to its rich composition in vitamins and trace elements. In Japan, for example, it is customary to eat 2-3 quail eggs every morning for children, schoolchildren, students, people in training or active mental work. Quail eggs have been observed to strengthen immunity, doctors are often recommended after injuries, bone fractures, osteoporosis.
Quail eggs
“Quail eggs have less allergenic proteins, so if a person is allergic to chicken egg protein, they can often use quail eggs as an alternative. Furthermore, the body temperature of quail is 42 degrees, which is an unfavorable medium for salmonella to multiply, so these eggs must not contain the salmonellosis bacteria, “says the farmer.
D. Urbonavičiūtė says that there is no significant difference in taste between quail and chicken eggs, but the popularity of quail eggs is influenced by their size and appearance. “People hear that quail eggs taste milder and lighter. Still, these eggs are valued for their decorative and elegant size. It is not uncommon to hear from mothers that children especially like quail eggs because they are smaller, which makes them convenient to eat. In addition, these types of eggs are often used in various celebrations, when one-bite sandwiches are served, “says the interlocutor.
How to cook quail eggs?
D. Urbonavičiūtė also shares the basics of quail egg cooking and offers a common recipe for quail eggs marinated in beet juice.
Quail eggs taken from the refrigerator are washed and placed in a small pot. Pour cold water. After setting the maximum heat on the stove, bring to a boil and turn off immediately. We leave the eggs in that water:
• 5 seconds if we want the yolks to remain liquid;
• 1 minute if we want the yolks to be soft;
• 2 minutes if we want the yolks to be hard.
After waiting the desired time, immediately pour cold water. After holding for a minute, we pour it out. Due to the relatively thick egg film under the shell, it is sometimes difficult to peel them off. You will successfully peel the quail egg if you press it into a plate and crush the entire shell. Then it will “unwrap” it easily. If you need to peel more eggs at once, cool them with cold water and pour it in. After covering the pot in which they are cooked, shake well to break all the eggs, and pour again with cold water. This way you can peel the eggs easily.
