“After April 1, it would be appropriate to monitor the weather conditions and change the tires when the air temperature is already more stable. However, you should not wait for the summer, because you need to change the wheels as well as the shoes, because in summer it is uncomfortable for you with winter shoes, also for your car ”, advises Andrius Žiukelis, head of the BTA Experience Department.
During the quarantine, the cars of some residents did not move at all, so the tires must be carefully inspected before going anywhere. A rare driver proactively checks tire pressure at a gas station or with a special gauge, although manufacturers recommend doing this every week or two.
“I suggest checking tire pressure at least before bigger trips or now that we go somewhere once a month in general. Some cars have an automatic tire pressure monitoring system, so their owners do not need to turn their heads; the system warns them about a pressure drop, ”says A. Žiukelis.
Fitting studless winter tires in the hot season, according to the expert, is the decision of every driver. If you drive a little, it is not a problem, if you drive more, winter tires are not suitable for summer driving, so driving can be more difficult and winter tires wear faster in hot weather.
Change yourself or trust a specialist?
If the tires are already mounted on the rims, changing them is not difficult. However, it is not possible to check the wheel balance yourself. Poor wheel balance is not always felt as soon as you sit in the car, and improper balance can wear out the suspension or tires.
“Not everyone who changes their tires in the yard has the opportunity to inspect their car from below, to self-assess obvious faults that need to be rectified quickly, but they are not very clear yet. Broken shock absorbers or axle joint protectors (“grenade rubbers”) – Such failures are quickly noticed in the shop, but not in the yard. Unless the driver has the necessary experience, and I would recommend entrusting this work to professionals who do not have it, ”explains A. Žiukelis.
It adds that the direction of rotation of the tires cannot be changed during installation. Some even take notes on which side a particular tire was on before. The tires can be changed from front to back and vice versa, but by no means change from right to left. Doing so temporarily increases fuel consumption and tires wear out faster.
“If there is a vibration after changing the tires, noises that are not heard, it is worth stopping immediately and inspecting the bolts, they may not all be tight. The main thing – do not ignore. If the work was carried out on a workshop, after inspecting the car and finding obvious defects, immediately return to the workshop ”, says the expert.
Before changing tires, advertisements for car services increase, “garage” type services also actively offer their services, but drivers who visit such places run the risk that the work is not done correctly. “Wheels, bolts loosely, uninspected condition of the car from below. Every tire change season we have events where after changing the tires the wheel turns and the car runs out of it. However, not all “garages” can be amortized, there are several cases and this is not the rule. Well-known names may have worked in quality systems, but people work on them and we all make mistakes, ”says A. Žiukelis.
Where do you store the tires?
Speaking of patched tires, the expert says that if patched according to technology, they can be driven. However, for safety reasons, it would be recommended to install such tires at the rear, which would facilitate operation in the event of an accident. “Problems arise when tires are repaired in an attempt to salvage, the biggest holes are covered, sometimes the ones that cannot be repaired. Tires are being repaired that cannot really be repaired ”, he emphasizes.
No less important is the depth of the tread of the tires, which according to the Road Traffic Regulations of April 10. until October 31. it must be at least 1.6 mm. “Tire and vehicle manufacturers recommend driving in summer with tires with a tread depth of at least 3 mm, in which case the tires meet the characteristics specified by the manufacturers and are safe,” says A. Žiukelis.
To ensure proper care of your tires, they should be stored in a dry, dark and cool place during the off-season. Do not store waste tires on the balcony, outdoors, etc., as the tires are exposed to the sun, their rubber ages and hardens, losing its properties. If it is not possible to store the tires at home, the services also offer this service.
